Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds stonewalled the Hickory Crawdads in Saturday's series opener, winning by a 3-0 final score. Lucas Long, Mike Burke and Ivan Hernandez shut down the Crawdads' offense for Delmarva's 11th shutout victory of the season.
Long returned to the Shorebirds' rotation after six weeks on the disabled list, making his first start since July 15th. Filling in for the promoted Josh Walker, Long looked very sharp in an abbreviated four-inning outing. Long allowed three hits in four scoreless frames, while matching his career-high with six strikeouts. Long induced four grounders and a popout as well, as a batted ball only left the infield three times against the starter.
The Shorebirds capitalized on two defensive miscues from the Hickory Crawdads in the second inning. Jonathan Meyer misplayed a bouncer at first base for a leadoff baserunner. After a single by Elier Leyva and fielder's choice, Riley Palmer scored the opening run on another misplayed grounder. Guillermo Salas collected the RBI as Juremi Profar fumbled a bouncer to third base. Steve Wilkerson hooked a two-out RBI single into right field for a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth, Cam Kneeland manufactured a run by himself. Kneeland led off with a single up the middle, his team-high 99th base hit of the season. Chris Dula tossed two wild pitches to advance Kneeland to third base. On a dropped third strike, Kneeland scampered home when catcher Chris Moorman threw to first base to complete a strikeout.
Mike Burke and Ivan Hernandez finished off Delmarva's 11th shutout of the year. Burke received the win with three scoreless innings in relief, striking out four batters to tie a season-high. Hernandez got a double play to end the eighth, and worked a perfect ninth for his third save.
The Shorebirds have won 10 of their last 15 games to climb over .500 for the season at 65-64. Right-hander Dariel Delgado (6-3, 3.40) has won each of his last two starts, taking the hill in Sunday's matchup vs. Hickory. Right-hander John Werner (0-2, 3.75) will be activated off the disabled list to start for the Crawdads. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
