Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The Hickory Crawdads came away with a dramatic win on the back of some late game heroics Friday night, with a 2-run home run by Jose Trevino giving the team the lead in the bottom of the 8th before Jairo Beras finished the contest by throwing out the tying runner at home to give the 'Dads a 5-4 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs.
In front of a crowd of 3,423 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium, the Crawdads entered the bottom of the 8th trailing the RiverDogs 4-3 before Trevino turned the game around with a 2-run homer to left to change a one-run deficit into a one-run advantage. The 'Dogs refused to go down quietly in the 9th though, as the Charleston loaded the bases with one out against Hickory closer Scott Williams. Williams induced a fly out to right field for the second out, prompting the RiverDogs to tag up their runner at third base and send him home to try to tie the game. Beras ensured that wouldn't happen however, as he threw out the runner at the plate to end the game and give the 'Dads the 5-4 win.
The late inning comeback gave Hickory the series win over Charleston 3 games to 1, while also improving the Crawdads home record in 2015 to 40-24.
The RiverDogs used the long ball to quickly jump ahead of the 'Dads in the 1st, with a leadoff, infield single by Devyn Bolasky and a 2-run homer to left from Angel Aguilar putting the 'Dogs ahead 2-0. The Crawdads answered back in the bottom of the 2nd, when the first five batters reached safely to bring home three runs and give the 'Dads a 3-2 lead. Beras kick started the frame by lining a solo homer to center field. Following a single by Juremi Profar, a walk from Eduard Pinto, and a bunt base knock by Jose Cardona, Michael De Leon delivered a bases loaded, 2-RBI single to center to put the club ahead.
The advantage held until the top of the 5th, when Charleston tied the contest at 3-3 when Ryan Lindemuth doubled, stole third, and come home on a throwing error by Trevino. The RiverDogs then re-took the lead in the top of the 8th on an RBI single from Tejeda, which made the score 4-3 and set the stage for the Crawdads comeback and 5-4 win.
Trevino finished the night 1-4 with his 14th big fly of the year and 2 RBI. Beras also ended the game 1-4 with his 9th long ball, while De Leon went 1-3 with 2 RBI.
Hickory reliever Shane McCain (2-2) earned the win with one run allowed on four hits and five strikeouts over 3.1 innings pitched. Charleston bullpen arm Brody Koerner (0-1) took the loss after giving up two runs on three hits over one inning of work, while Williams (9) recorded the save with a scoreless 9th.
The Crawdads (77-51/33-27) will now hit the road for a 5-game series in Delmarva against the Shorebirds, with first pitch on Saturday scheduled for 7:00 pm.
