IT TAKES TWO: West Virginia's five game winning streak was snapped with a 7-6 extra inning loss at Lakewood on Wednesday afternoon. The BlueClaws jumped out to an early lead with a two-run second, but the Power evened the score in the fourth on RBI base hits by Jerrick Suiter and Kawika Emsley-Pai. Lakewood led 5-3 after six before West Virginia took its only lead of the day with a three-run top of the seventh. Jordan Luplow doubled in Elvis Escobar and Michael Suchy hit a two-run homer to push the Power ahead 6-5. The 'Claws pinned a blown save on Julio Vivas in the seventh to tie the game. In the 11th, Lakewood tallied the winning run on a single, a two-base throwing error and a single down the third base line to take the walk-off win. Nick Neumann was tagged with his first loss of the season.
SOME LIKE IT HOT: Between Tuesday and Wednesday's games, the Power and BlueClaws played a total of seven extra innings. The BlueClaws had the winning run on the bases in each of those seven innings, but the Power bullpen managed to get out of each inning except the last one.
YOU SPIN ME ROUND: Wednesday's loss was the first for the Power this season when the club's starting pitcher went six or more innings. West Virginia is now 6-1 when the starter goes six innings and remains 1-0 when the starting pitcher goes seven.
TAKE ON ME: Tuesday's 14 inning game was the longest game the Power have played this season, both time and innings. It is also the longest game since West Virginia lost 8-7 at home against Lakewood on June 30, 2014. Infielder Adam Landecker surrendered a solo home run to Andrew Knapp in the top of the 15th to decide it.
NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP: Dovydas Neverauskas was placed on the Power Disabled List prior to Tuesday's game with a right forearm strain. Neverauskas is 1-2 with a 5.17 ERA this season, but has a 1.38 earned run average over three appearances out of the West Virginia bullpen spanning 13.2 innings of work.
ALL OF YOU: After placing Dovydas Neverauskas on the Power DL, Pittsburgh transferred reliever Julio Vivas from Bradenton to West Virginia. Vivas, since as a non-drafted free agent in 2011, was 1-1 for the Marauders this season over 15 appearances and held a 2.59 ERA. The right-hander skipped from Bristol to the Florida State League this season.
WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME: Sam Street's five innings of work Tuesday were the most in any one appearance during his career. Prior to this season, the Aussie had not worked more than two innings in any outing. Street has made 11 appearances this season, six of which have consisted of three or more innings.
FAR FROM OVER: West Virginia and Delmarva will meet 15 total times this season, though this four game series is the Power's only trip to Salisbury, Maryland. Since 2005, the Power are Shorebirds have played 123 games against each other and West Virginia holds a 63-60 lead. The Shorebirds do own a winning record in their home park, having beaten the Power 30 times in 52 games.
POWER PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 2: West Virginia will host its first of two Pets in the Park this season at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday, June 2. Fans are invited to bring their dogs, cats, and other ballpark friendly animals for a night of fun in Charleston.
POWER POINTS: Jerrick Suiter extended his on-base streak to 13 straight games with two hits last night... West Virginia's road record is a game under .500 at 11-12. The club has not held a winning record on the road since April 21...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh won its sixth straight by beating Miami 5-2. Gerrit COle pitched seven innings for his seventh win of the season.... Indianapolis edged Buffalo 2-1... Altoona blanked New Britain 4-0. Chad Kuhl, Yhonathan Barrios and Jeff Inman shutout the Rock Cats on five hits... Bradenton lost 7-6 to Daytona. Harold Ramirez had two hits and extended his hitting streak to 25-straight dating back to last season with West Virginia.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on Charleston's ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, online at wvpower.com and on the TuneIn Radio App.
