Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC-- Two benches clearing incidents and four ejections may be what most will talk about following Thursday night's Asheville Tourists and Augusta GreenJackets contest. However, Asheville played an outstanding game and won their fifth straight at McCormick Field by holding off Augusta 7-3.
Carlos Polanco was magnificent. The Tourists starting pitcher breezed through the first six innings, recorded seven strikeouts, and did not allow a single run. The GreenJackets starter, Nick Gonzalez, ran into trouble in the third. With Max White at third base and two outs, Omar Carrizales tripled to deep center putting the home team in front 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Shane Hoelscher squared up the first pitch of the inning and hit it over the right-centerfield wall for his third Home Run of the season and second in as many games. After Josh Fuentes reached on an error and Drew Weeks singled to center, White worked a walk to load the bases. Dom Nunez delivered with a two-run double to right and a wild pitch then made it 5-0.
Forrest Wall added to Asheville's lead in the fifth. The second-baseman worked a three and one count before clubbing a two-run Homer down the right field line. In the top of the sixth, things turned a bit hostile.
Polanco hit the lead-off batter Johneshwy Fargas in the leg. Fargas and Nunez exchanged words at home plate and the benches spilled onto the field. The umpires and coaches did a nice job keeping the teams separated and warnings were issued to both teams.
At the start of the seventh inning, Polanco hit Skyler Ewing and was immediately ejected along with Asheville's manager Warren Schaeffer. In the bottom half of the seventh, the GreenJackets turned an inning ending double play which involved Asheville's Luis Jean and Augusta's Jeremy Sy contacting each other at second base. The two players immediately began arguing and both benches spilled onto the field again. Pushing and shoving ensued while both Jean and Sy were ejected.
Augusta managed three runs over the final two innings. The two teams play three more games over the next three days with Friday night's contest scheduled for 7:05pm.
