Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 28, 2015) - Yelmison Peralta spun a career-long 6.0 innings of scoreless ball to lead Kannapolis to a shutout victory over the Suns, 4-0, on Thursday at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown. The Intimidators (22-25) defense helped Peralta along the way, turning inning-ending double plays in the fifth and sixth frames.
The Dominican right-hander limited the Suns to three hits and two walks while striking out one to earn the win. Peralta (2-4) paved the way for the Intimidators' seventh shut out of the season, but the bullpen finished the job. Jacob Morris was perfect in the seventh and eighth innings, striking out two batters. Kelvis Valerio worked around a base hit and two walks, stranding three on base in a scoreless ninth.
Kannapolis took the lead with two runs in the third inning. John Ziznewski doubled to the right-center field gap to score Ethan Gross then came home on a double play ball for a 2-0 lead.
Matt Purke (0-1), the Suns starter, made his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last May. The Nationals' third round pick from the 2011 draft worked four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts in a losing effort.
The Intimidators added a run in the top of the seventh when Brett Austin, Ryan Leonards, and Ziznewski all drew walks off reliever R.C. Orlan to load the bases. James Baldwin followed with a sac-fly to right field for a 3-0 lead.
In the eighth, Louie Lechich singled with one out, moved to second on a balk, stolen third, and came home on a Hagerstown error for a 4-0 lead.
The career-long outing by Peralta is the third straight by an Intimidators starting pitcher. On Tuesday, Yency Almonte tossed a personal-best 7.0 innings against Lexington, and Spencer Adams followed with his first 7.0-inning outing on Wednesday against the Legends.
Kannapolis continues this four-games series against the Suns on Friday at Municipal Stadium as RHP Luis Martinez (1-4, 6.14 ERA) takes the mound for the Intimidators against Hagerstown's RHP Jefry Rodriguez (1-3, 7.20 ERA). The Intimidators return home on Thursday, June 4, for a four-game series against Delmarva.
