THE LEAD OFF: The Power fell to the Asheville Tourists on Thursday evening at McCormick Field 5-4. The Tourists took the early advantage with a run in the first on a Correlle Prime RBI double and then put two more up in the third behind a Jordan Patterson two-run home run. The Power came storming back in the fourth when JaCoby Jones blasted a two-run shot and a pair scored on an Asheville error. Asheville, however, took over from that point. Prime doubled in another in the fifth to tie the game before an RBI base knock in the seventh gave the Tourists the victory. Henry Hirsch was charged with the loss while Trent Blank earned the win and Matt Pierpont tallied the save.
FINAL TOUR: The West Virginia Power and Asheville Tourists will matchup for the final series between the two at McCormick field this weekend. The Tourists hold a 4-3 advantage over West Virginia this season, with Asheville having won the series at McCormick Field and West Virginia taking the set at Appalachian Power Park. Asheville leads the all-time series since 2005 49-37 with a 24-19 advantage at McCormick Field over the Power.
MAKIN' MOVES: Before Thursday's game, the Pittsburgh Pirates activated outfielder Jeff Roy from the Power Disabled List. Roy was batting .216 in 23 games with one home run and 10 RBIs before being placed on the Disabled List on August 1 with a knee injury. The Pirates also released right-handed pitcher Robby Rowland. Rowland was in his second stint with the Power and was 1-0 with a 7.71 ERA in six appearances.
NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET: JaCoby Jones home run on Thursday was his 17th of the season, placing the shortstop in a tie for fifth most in a single West Virginia Power season. Three other players have hit seventeen in a season: Stetson Allie (2013), Mat Gamel (2006) and Andrew Lefave (2007). Stephen Chapman (2007) holds the record with 24 long balls.
POWER OUTAGE: JaCoby Jones blasted a two-run home run in Thursday's loss against the Asheville Tourists. West Virginia, however, is still second-last in the South Atlantic League in long balls with 48 just ahead of Delmarva. Meanwhile, the Tourists have launched 106 home runs in 2014, just behind Hickory for top in the league. 68 of Asheville's home runs have come at McCormick Field.
SERIES WINNER: The West Virginia Power captured their eighth series victory of the 2014 season with a win over the Hagerstown Suns on Wednesday as well as their second home series win. The Power are 13-20 this season in series finales and had last won a series at Appalachian Power Park against Ashevile (4/14-4/16).
SECOND HALF SURGE: The West Virginia Power won 20 games in the first half of the 2014 season. With 26 games remaining in the second half, the Power bested that mark on Monday with their 21st second half win in a 5-2 victory over Hagerstown. West Virginia won their 20th game of the first half on May 30 with a 6-2 victory at Greensboro, but did not win another game for the remainder of the first half.
POWER PROMO UPDATE- AUGUST 23: The Power battle the Kannapolis Intimidators on Saturday, August 23 at Appalachian Power Park on for Back to School Night. Backpacks will be given away to the first 1,000 fans 12 and under for the 7:05 first pitch.
POWER POINTS: In 68 of West Virginia's 115 games, the Power have allowed the first run of the ballgame. West Virginia is 14-54 when allowing the first run of the game in 2014 and 28-19 when scoring first. Meanwhile, when West Virginia trails after six innings, the Power are 8-47 compared to 26-8 when they lead.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: The Pittsburgh Pirates toppled the Miami Marlins at PNC Park 7-2. Edinson Volquez tossed seven scoreless for the win... Indianapolis was blanked by Rochester 7-0... Altoona shutout Trenton 5-0. Jhonathan Ramos pitched six scoreless innings to lead the way... Bradenton split a doubleheader with Jupiter, taking game one 5-0 behind 11 strikeouts from Tyler Glasnow and falling in game two 9-6... Jamestown edged Connecticut 3-2.
