Suns score walk-off to overcome I's 5-run 7th

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns negated a 5-run seventh inning by the Intimidators by coming from behind for a walk-off win, 6-5, over Kannapolis on Friday at Municipal Stadium. The Suns overcame a 5-4 deficit with a run to tie the game in the eighth and the game-winning run with no outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Narcisco Mesa led off the home half of the ninth with a base hit, and Spencer Kieboom followed with a double to score the runner from first to win the game for Hagerstown. Kieboom finished two RBI in going 2-5 while Mesa paced the Suns offense by going 3-5 with an RBI.

Hagerstown led 4-0 thanks to six shutout innings by Suns starter Nick Pivetta, who took no decision. Jake Johansen, who opened the season in the Suns rotation before recently moving to the bullpen, gave up all five runs (four earned) on five hits and a walk in one-third of an inning.

After Toby Thomas drew a leadoff walk in the seventh, T.J. Williams, Ryan Leonards, and Adam Engel all followed with base hits to push a run across. Christian Stringer followed with a 2-run single to pull the Intimidators within a run, 4-3. Trey Michalczewski dropped a sac-bunt to move runners into scoring position with one out, and Jacob Morris tied the game with another run on a base hit. Stringer put the Intimidators ahead, 5-4, by scoring on a Hagerstown error.

The Suns tied the game in the eighth when Jimmy Yezzo singled to score Carlos Lopez.

Justin Thomas (3-4) tossed 2 and 2/3 relief innings of scoreless ball to earn the win for Hagerstown, while Kannapolis reliever David Putman (0-3) was tagged with the loss. Intimidators starter Chris Freudenberg lasted 4.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts, while taking no decision in his second start at Class A. Brad Salgado worked 3.0 relief innings, allowing a run on three hits.

Both Kannapolis and Hagerstown tallied 12 hits, and eight of nine Intimidators hit safely. Engel, Stringer, Michalczewski, and Morris each enjoyed a 2-hit game.

The Intimidators continue this 4-game series against the Hagerstown Suns (Nationals) on Saturday at Municipal Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The team returns to Kannapolis on Monday, Aug. 11, for a 3-game series against the Lexington Legends (Royals).
