Lexington Legends News Release
(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Carlos Garcia's pop fly single to right field scored Alexis Rivera with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Lexington Legends got past the Greenville Drive 6-5 Friday night. Frank Schwindel had two hits and three runs batted in for the Legends.
The Legends took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Alfredo Escalera led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Garcia walked, and Schwindel brought both runners home with a double to left center field. Schwindel moved to third after a fly ball to right field by Mauricio Ramos, and scored as Dominique Taylor grounded out.
Greenville started its comeback in the third inning. With one out, Owensboro native and former University of Louisville star Cole Sturgeon doubled, moved to third on a single by Manuel Margot, and scored on a base hit by Tzu-Wei Lin. Sturgeon was 3-for-3 and scored three runs for Greenville.
Carlos Coste's leadoff home run in the fifth cut the Legends' lead to 3-2. Sturgeon followed Coste's homer with a single, and scored the tying run on Margot's double.
The Legends broke the tie in the sixth inning. Ramos reached base on an error by Lin, the shortstop. Ramos advanced to second on Taylor's sacrifice, moved to third on Kenny Diekroeger's single and scored on a wild pitch.
Sturgeon's double and two ground outs produced a run for Greenville in the seventh inning, tying the game at 4-4, but the Legends moved in front again in the bottom of the seventh on Escalera's one-out single, a sacrifice by Garcia, and Schwindel 's base hit to right field.
In the top of the ninth, the Drive loaded the bases with one out on a walk to Jimmy Rider, a sacrifice, a walk to Sturgeon and a single by Margot. Lin struck out for the second out, but Wendell Rijo drew a walk from Legends' reliever Tim Hill to force in a run, tying the game at 5-5.
Rivera doubled with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Escalera struck out, but Garcia's pop fly fell in short right center field, just out of the reach of Rijo, the second baseman, and Rivera came home with the winning run.
Hill (1-0) got the win. Greenville reliever Oscar Perez (0-1) took the loss. The Legends have won the first two games of the series, which continues Saturday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
