THE LEAD OFF: The Power open the second half of the 2014 season tonight. West Virginia closed out the first portion of the schedule with a 6-5 loss to Delmarva on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. The Shorebirds scored once in the fifth and added two, two-run home runs in the sixth off reliever Shane Carle for a 5-0 advantage. The Power sent 11 men to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and got four runs back on a JaCoby Jones grand slam. Wyatt Mathisen scored the game tying-run when Harold Ramirez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. In the seventh, Chance Sisco singled in Drew Dosch to put the 'Birds back in front for good. Carle took the loss and Jon Keller vultured a win. Jimmy Yacabonis worked the ninth for his league-best 14th save.
NEW LOW: West Virginia finished the first half with its lowest winning percentage in any half of any season since 2005. Prior to this year, the fewest wins that a Power team had recorded in any half was 23 during the opening half of the 2012 season. West Virginia has a .294 winning percentage after 68 games this season.
TWO WEEKS WORTH: West Virginia's losing skid has reached 14 games; the longest in franchise history dating back to the 2005 season. No West Virginia team had lost more than eight games in a row at any point over the last nine-plus seasons. The South Atlantic League record for consecutive losses is 22, set in 1975 by a Pittsburgh Pirates-affiliated Charleston (SC) club.
STAR POWER: The 55th SAL All-Star Game was held in Hickory on Tuesday and ended in a 4-4 tie after ten innings. Reese McGuire and Erich Weiss each made an appearance as a reserve and both players collected base hits. Weiss entered as a defensive substitution in the sixth inning, playing third base and went 1-2 at the plate. McGuire caught from the seventh inning on and went 1-1 with a triple and a run batted in.
DIME TIME: Harold Ramirez's hitting streak is at ten straight games after two hits on Sunday. The outfielder is batting .342 since June 5 with 13 hits over 38 at bats. Ramirez's current streak is his longest this year and the outfielder has reached safely with at least one base hit in 28 of his 36 games.
NO SUPPORT CAST: The Power have been out-scored 100-45 during their 14 games losing streak. During this stretch, West Virginia is batting .243 and has a staff earned run average of 6.81.
WAY BACK MACHINES: Reese McGuire's first professional home run on Saturday came in his 94th game within the Pirates organization. Kawika Emsley-Pai's home run was his first with West Virginia and occurred in his 125th game in a Power jersey. It was the second on Emsley-Pai's professional career with the other happening on June 30, 2012 for Bradenton against Palm Beach.
TROUBLE STARTS FIRST: West Virginia has allowed 54 first inning runs, 39 of which are earned. The staff's earned run average is 5.16 in the first inning this season and 4.38 over the remainder of the game.
PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 28: West Virginia will host Lakewood and The ZOOperstars Gates open at six and the gates open at seven. The inflatable characters will entertain fans through the course of the game.
POWER POINTS: The Power are now 7-17 in one-run games this season. Only Rome has played in as many one-run games as West Virginia this season... Justin Maffei has the top fielding percentage of any outfielder in the South Atlantic League this season (1.000) among those who qualify... Over the first 40 stolen base attempts against Reese McGuire, only 20 were successful (50%). Over the last 16 tries, 13 have stolen a base safely (19% caught stealing).
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 11-4 to Cincinnati at PNC Park. The Reds tagged Edinson Volquez for eight runs over two-and-a-third.... Indianapolis bested Gwinett 2-1. Nick Kingham worked seven innings for his first Triple-A win... Altoona gave up three in the eighth in a 6-5 loss to New Hampshire... Bradenton was blanked 5-0 by Fort Myers... Jamestown lost 5-4 in 11 at Williamsport. Tanner Gushue drove in a pair for the Jammers.
