THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia lost 8-3 at Greensboro in Sunday's series finale. The Hoppers scored three in the first on a home run by Kentrell Dewitt. After Danny Collins solo home run in the second, the Hoppers added a run for a 4-1 edge. West Virginia scored once in the third on a fielder's choice and added a run on a ground out in the fourth to cut the deficit down to one. Greensboro scored once in the sixth and added three more in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Cody Dickson took the loss and fell to 2-7 while Jarlin Garcia earned the win. Collins and Harold Ramirez had two hits to pace the Power.
STRIVE FOR MORE: West Virginia has 14 games remaining in the first half of the 2014 season. The franchise record for fewest wins in one half of a season is 23, set in the 2012 season under manager Rick Sofield. The inaugural club won 25 games in the first half. The club record for wins in any half of any season is 48, set in the first half of the 2008 campaign.
HOME SWEET HOME: West Virginia returns home for three against the Intimidators before the final road trip of the first half; a four game stint in Hickory next weekend. West Virginia concludes the first half at home against Greensboro and Delmarva. The Power have a 7-18 mark at Appalachian Power Park this year, including four wins during the most recent eight-game homestand.
INTIMIDATION FACTOR NONE: The Power host the Kannapolis Intimidators for the second time this season. Kannapolis swept a three game series in April; the first three games of a franchise record 11 game home losing streak. West Virginia has, however, beaten the Intimidators four times in six games at CMC-NorthEast Stadium in North Carolina. The Power lead the all-time series 52-49, though the Intimidators have a 25-23 edge in Charleston.
ALL-STARS COMING: The South Atlantic League will announce the 2014 All-Star rosters at 10:00 am on Tuesday morning. The 2014 SAL All-Star game is slated for Tuesday, June 17, at Hickory's L.P. Frans Stadium.
IRON MEN: Jacoby Jones, Delmarva's Trey Mancini and Hagerstown's Wilmer Difo have played 55 games this season, more than other player in the league. Erich Weiss is in a group of four who have played 54 games, while Wyatt Mathisen is in a group of seven who have played in 53 games this year.
NINETEEN STRAIGHT: Reese McGuire's hitting streak reached 19 games with an eighth inning double on Friday. The 19-year-old's streak is the longest active run in the South Atlantic League and trails only Asheville's Pat Valaika and his 22-game streak in April to early May as the longest by any player in the league this season. McGuire's streak is also the longest by a Power player since Starling Marte hit safely in 22 straight during the 2009 season.
PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 3: West Virginia hosts Kannapolis at 7:05 pm on Tuesday, June 3. It is the first of two "Bark in the Park" games at Appalachian Power Park this season. Dogs are admitted free without a ticket.
POWER POINTS: Austin Meadows was promoted to the West Virginia roster from Jamestown on Saturday and placed on the Power Disabled List. The outfielder has not played this season due to a left hamstring injury... Former Power outfielder Mel Rojas, Jr. made his Triple-A debut on Saturday, serving as the designated hitter for the Indianapolis Indians... Justin Maffei is batting .333 with nine hits over 27 at bats during his current six game hitting streak, dating back to May 26. It is Maffei's second streak this season of six games or more with at least one hit.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 on Sunday night. Andrew McCutchen went 3-4 and scored three of the five runs to help Edison Volquez beat one of his former teams... Indianapolis scored four in the eighth to beat Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre 9-7... Jason Creasy threw six scoreless innings in the win.
