GreenJackets Lose Series Opener to Rome Braves, 6-5

Augusta, GA--The Augusta GreenJackets (27-28) lost the first game of their series against the Rome Braves (17-40) on Monday night, at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

GreenJackets starting pitcher, Chase Johnson, received his fifth loss of the season. In three innings pitched, Johnson gave up seven hits, four earned runs and only struck out three. Relief pitcher, Steven Messner came in for Johnson and pitched five and one-thirds innings. During those innings he gave up four hits and two runs. DJ Snelten finished the game for the GreenJackets pitching two-thirds of an inning and gave up one hit.

The Rome Braves started the series strong ending the game with 12 hits against the three Augusta pitchers. The team first scored two runs in the third inning. The first run came off a ground out by shortstop John Carmago. A single by Jake Schrader drove in the Brave's second run.

The team scored two more runs in the fourth inning. Orrin Sears scored on a walk and Ronald Luna scored a run off a double play. The GreenJackets scored their first two runs in the fourth. Two singles and a walk allowed Rando Moreno to score the team's first run. A sacrifice fly by Brandon Bednar drove in the second run.

The GreenJackets scored their third run in the seventh on a wild pitch and a single by Ty Ross. However, the Braves were quick to score a run in the top of the eighth off of two singles and a fielding error.

Both teams scored again in the ninth inning. Johan Carmago drove in the final run for Rome. After scoring two runs and being within one run, Ryan Tuntland pinch hit for the GreenJackets but flew out to end the game.

The GreenJackets continue their series against Rome on Tuesday, June 3rd at 7 pm.
