Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Hagerstown, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds dropped the series opener of a crucial three-game series in Hagerstown. The Suns squeaked by Delmarva (34-23) with a 4-2 victory on Monday evening. With the defeat, the Shorebirds have fallen four games back in the Northern Division with 13 games to play.
Delmarva opened the game with a chance to set the tone of the entire series. Gregory Lorenzo and Drew Dosch combined for back-to-back one-out singles. The threat in the first inning vanished after the Suns' middle infield turned a double play on a roller by Trey Mancini.
Hagerstown capitalized on their early opportunity, taking a lead in the second inning. The Suns plated three runs in the frame, all coming with two outs. After a single by Brennan Middleton, Rafael Bautista lined a triple over the head of Mike Yastrzemski in center. Later, a line drive to short nicked off the glove of Justin Viele, bringing across two runs on the error.
Trey Mancini crushed a solo home run in the fourth inning, his second of the year. Delmarva got another back in the eighth inning with a two-out rally, sparked by an error by Jimmy Yezzo. Chance Sisco delivered an RBI single to make it 3-2. However, the Shorebirds stranded the tying run on second base.
After Hagerstown plated a key insurance run in the eighth, Delmarva tried to make something happen in the ninth. Federico Castagnini and Mike Yastrzemski both singled, as Yastrzemski lined a base hit that struck the field umpire. Lorenzo soared a ball to the right-center gap, but Bautista tracked it down for the final out.
Hector Silvestre earned the win for Hagerstown, and Jake Walsh picked up his fifth save of the year. Sebastian Vader settled for a defeat, ending his streak of six straight wins.
The Shorebirds will try to bounce back on Tuesday evening in Hagerstown. Delmarva turns to right-hander Luc Rennie (2-4, 5.11) against Suns' righty Lucas Giolito (2-0, 2.51), who has not pitched since May 11th. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm at Municipal Stadium.
