Shorebirds Game Notes at Hagerstown

PREVIEW: The Shorebirds completed a four-game sweep with an 11-2 victory over Lakewood. Mike Yastrzemski had a fantastic day at the plate with a pair of three-run triples, including the go-ahead base hit. Delmarva scored seven runs in the seventh to put it away. The Shorebirds now travel to first-place Hagerstown for an important three-game set.

TODAY'S OPPONENT: Hector Silvestre will start the series opener for Hagerstown. The left-hand- er is 1-2 with a 3.63 ERA in eight starts this season. Silvestre has lost back-to-back starts, includ- ing an outing in Salisbury. The southpaw allowed five runs on eight hits in six innings against Del- marva in a 7-2 Shorebirds win. Mike Yastrzemski hit a decisive three-run homer run off Silvestre in that contest. Silvestre went 7-0 with a 1.82 ERA in 13 appearances for the GCL Nats.

19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.

ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles earned a series split in Houston with a 9-4 victory over the Astros. Former Shorebird Manny Machado crushed his first career grand slam in the win. Wei-Yin Chen improved to 6-2 with the victory, and offseason acquisition David Lough hit his first home run as an Oriole. The O's are now 28-27 in 3rd place in the AL East.

THE IRON IS HOT: 19 out of the 25 players on the Shorebirds active roster appeared for the Ab- erdeen IronBirds in 2013. The IronBirds put together an impressive season, making the playoffs for the first time in their 12-year franchise history. Aberdeen won the McNamara Division in the New York-Penn League with a 40-32 record. The IronBirds lost in the first round of the NYPL play- offs, losing 2 games to 0 against the Tri-City Valley Cats.

SEBASTIAN VADER | P

On Tuesday night, Vader collected his sixth straight victory, all coming his last six starts. Vader retired the first 13 batters he faced before a double in the 5th inning. The right-hander improved to 7-1 on the year, tying the South Atlantic League lead for wins with Brady Lail and Nick Pivetta. Vader also low- ered his ERA to 3.09.

WHO'S HOT - JIMMY YACABONIS

Through his first 17 appearances, the Del- marva closer has yet to allow a run. Yacabo- nis is perfect 13-for-13 in save opportunities with a 1-0 record. In 20.0 innings, Yacabonis has struck out 26 batters.

WHO ELSE - TREY MANCINI

Mancini finally unleashed his first home run of the year with a deep blast in Lakewood. The first baseman collected 10 RBIs in the first three games of the Lakewood series. He now has 33 RBIs on the year.
