Hagerstown Suns News Release

About last series... The Hagerstown Suns (37-19) avoided a four-game sweep at the hands of the Kannapolis Intimidators (25-30) by splitting a double-header on Sunday. The Intimidators won game one of the double-header Sunday 5-1, while the Suns took game two 11-5. Hagerstown ended its eight-game road trip with a 2-6 record.

In game one of the double-header on Sunday the Intimidators put up three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. Third baseman Trey Michalczewski delivered a two-out two-run double in the inning, and he scored on a single to short by catcher Jeremy Dowdy. That's all the run support starting RHP Jake Sanchez (5-3) would need, as he tossed a complete game of seven innings, surrendering one earned run on five hits while striking out six. Starting RHP Reynaldo Lopez (0-1) suffered the loss for Hagerstown. He threw three innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two.

In the second game of the double-header on Sunday the Suns collected 11 runs on 12 hits. Eight of those 11 runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning, when Hagerstown sent 12 hitters to the plate and turned a 4-3 deficit into an 11-4 rout. LHP Joseph Webb (1-0) was the beneficiary of the offensive onslaught as he pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Starting RHP Tyler Barnette (2-4) took the loss for Kannapolis. He allowed 10 earned runs on 11 hits in 3.2 innings.

The series began with two one-run losses for the Suns during a double-header on Saturday. In game one of the double-header Kannapolis was held to just three hits, but two of those hits left the yard, including a two-run homerun by CF Hunter Jones in the bottom of the fifth. The Jones homerun turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead for the Intimidators, and that wound up being the final score.

Starting RHP Robinson Leyer (3-3) notched the win for Kannapolis, going six innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out two. Starting RHP Jake Johansen (4- 2) took the loss for Hagerstown. He threw five innings, surrendering three earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six.

In the second game of the double-header on Saturday the Intimidators plated two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish, as neither team scored in the final four innings. Right fielder Jacob Morris drove in the winning run for Kannapolis with a single to left-center field. LHP Jordan Guerrero (3-0) threw two scoreless innings in relief for the Intimidators to pick up the win. Starting RHP Jefry Rodriguez (0-1) suffered the loss for Hagerstown. He went three innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two. RHP David Putman recorded his third save of the year by tossing a scoreless seventh.

On the Mound... LHP Hector Silvestre will be heading to the hill tonight for the Suns. He is making his ninth start and appearance this season. He last pitched on May 27 at Delmarva, going six innings and allowing five earned runs on eight hits including one homer. He walked one and struck out one in the outing. Silvestre has allowed 11 earned runs over his last 12 innings after giving up just three earned runs over his first 22.2 innings worked this season. This is his second start against Delmarva this season and his sixth start at home, where he is 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA. Overall this season Silvestre has tossed 34.2 innings, allowing 14 earned runs on 28 hits including three homers. He has walked eight and has struck out 17. Tonight he goes up against RHP Sebastian Vader for the Shorebirds.

Vader is making his 10th start and appearance this season. He last threw on May 27 at home against Hagerstown, going seven innings and surrendering two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three. Vader has pitched seven innings in each of his last three starts, and has not given up more than two earned runs in any of those outings. This is his second time facing the Suns this season and his fifth start on the road, where he is 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA.

The deal with Delmarva... The Suns and Shorebirds are playing the 10th of 23 games against each other this season and the fourth of 10 that will take place in Hagerstown. The Suns are 3-6 against Delmarva this year. The Shorebirds are currently 34-22 overall, good for second place in the Northern Division standings. Delmarva is currently fifth in team batting with a .262 average and second in pitching with a team ERA of 2.74.
