THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia knocked off Rome 14-6 on Monday night. The Power plated six runs in the first off Carlos Salazar, keyed by a three-run double from Elvis Escobar. Holding a 6-3 lead after four, West Virginia added eight runs over the next three innings, including three on a bases loaded triple by Justin Maffei. The Braves scored three times in the ninth to close the scoring. Buddy Borden won his second straight decision with five innings of work, striking out six and walking none, while Salazar took the loss. Eight of the nine Power batters had at least one hit and six different players drove in runs. Maffei finished with four runs batted in while Erich Weiss and Danny Collins had three hits each. West Virginia's 14 runs and 16 hits in the win are both season-highs.
STILL GOING: Reese McGuire's hitting streak was extended with a first inning single and is now at 16 games; the longest active streak in the South Atlantic League. The catcher has reached safely in every game since returning from the Disabled List on May 3 and is hitting .381 during his streak.
WHEN IN ROME: West Virginia and Rome play the second of their 11 meetings this season tonight at State Mutual Stadium. The Power now lead the all-time series 15-14 and have a 7-10 record against the Braves in Rome.
FOUR! Justin Maffei became the third player to drive in four runs during a game this season. Elvis Escobar has accomplished the feat twice, most recently with a grand slam on Sunday against Lakewood. Erich Weiss was the first player to drive in four during a game this season with his inside-the-park grand slam against Lexington on April 13.
WINNING TIME: Henry Hirsch worked two innings on Monday in his 13th appearance of the year, 12 of which have been in a relief role. It was the first time that the right-hander worked a game in relief that West Virginia went on to win. The Power also won his spot start during game two of a doubleheader at Kannapolis. Hirsch pitched four scoreless and did not factor in the decision on April 30.
BORDEN DEALING: Buddy Borden won his second straight start after having gone winless in each of his first 14 professional appearances dating back to 2013 with Jamestown. The right-hander has a staff-best 2.53 earned run average, placing him just outside the top ten in the South Atlantic League. Borden also leads West Virginia with 45 strikeouts. After ten starts last season, Tyler Glasnow led the Power with 64 strikeouts.
SPLIT DECISION: West Virginia split both four game series with Delmarva and Lakewood over the eight game, nine day homestand. The Power had gone 3-14 at Appalachian Power Park this season prior to the homestand and won more games over the last nine days at home than they had over the first month and a half of the season.
OWENS GETS THE CALL: 2009 Power All-Star Rudy Owens made his Major League debut Friday night for the Houston Astros against the Seattle Mariners. Owens, traded by Pittsburgh with Robbie Grossman for Wandy Rodriguez in 2012, is the 39th former Power player to reach the Majors and the second this year (Casey Sadler).
PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 3: West Virginia hosts Kannapolis at 7:05 pm on Tuesday, June 3. It is the first of two "Bark in the Park" games at Appalachian Power Park this season. Dogs are admitted free without a ticket.
POWER POINTS: Sunday's win marked the third victory by West Virginia this season when allowing the first run... Reese McGuire's hitting streak is the longest by a West Virginia player since Alen Hanson's 16-game streak in April of 2012.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh rallied for two in the eighth and three in the ninth to beat the New York Mets 5-3 at Citi Field. Tony Watson earned his fifth win and Gaby Sanchez provided the offense.... Indianapolis lost 6-2 to Buffalo after allowing 17 hits... Altoona dropped a 4-3 walk-off at Erie. The Seawolves scored twice in the ninth off Emmanuel De Leon... Bradenton was idle on Monday and plays at Tampa tonight. Jason Creasy will start for the Marauders.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on Charleston's ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, online at wvpower.com and on the TuneIn Radio App. Adam Marco will call the action for all 140 games and will be joined by Jake Corrigan when the team plays at Appalachian Power Park.
