Greenville Drive News Release
Charleston, SC - Tuesday's doubleheader was quiet offensively on both sides, as the Greenville Drive (25-25) defeated the Charleston RiverDogs (27-24) in the hits category 7-6. Despite that, the RiverDogs won the runs category in both games, as they took a 4-2 win in the opener and won the nightcap 3-0.
The Drive had no answers for Charleston's Jaron Long (3-1) in the second game, as he fired a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts against one walk. Aneudis Peralta grounded a third-inning infield single, and Manuel Margot lined a two-out single to left in the seventh for the only Drive hits.
Charleston scored all three of their runs in the first two innings, benefitting when Greenville starter Myles Smith (1-3) battling his control. He issued a pair of walks in the first, and both runners scored when Mike Ford lined a two-run double to right. In the second, Jose Rosario drew a leadoff walk and later scored on an RBI groundout by Michael O'Neill.
Ford collected all three of Charleston's hits in the nightcap.
The RiverDogs took advantage of a pair of Drive errors in the third inning of game one, scoring three runs and never looking back. Tzu-Wei Lin's misplay on a Jackson Valera grounder to lead off the inning gave the RiverDogs a runner, and with the bases loaded, Tyler Wade delivered a two-run single to make the score 2-0. Forrestt Allday's wild throw after the base hit put runners on second and third, and Aaron Judge brought home a run on a groundout.
Greenville finally got to RiverDogs starter Caleb Smith (4-3) in the sixth, as Allday drew a leadoff walk and scored on Jantzen Witte's double. Carlos Asuaje followed with an RBI double of his own to knock Smith out of the game. Cesar Vargas came on and slammed the door from there, retiring all five batters he faced to pick up his third save.
Daniel McGrath (1-2) was the tough-luck loser for the Drive in the opener, hurling the team's first complete game of the season while allowing only three hits and two earned runs in six innings with four strikeouts.
Wade had two hits and three RBI for Charleston, while Witte collected a pair of hits for Greenville.
The teams wrap up their series on Wednesday night in Charleston, with first pitch at 7:05. RH Joe Gunkel (1-0, 1.29) takes the ball for the Drive, and RH Brady Lail (7-1, 3.14) starts for the RiverDogs.
