Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
HICKORY, Md. (May 27, 2014) - James Dykstra spun 6.0 scoreless innings to lead the Kannapolis Intimidators to a shutout win, 3-0, over the Hickory Crawdads on Tuesday at L.P. Frans Stadium, snapping a 7-game losing streak.
Dykstra (3-5) retired 14 straight batters at one point, allowing just two hits and a walk on his way to his first win since April 22. Hickory's Nick Vickerson drew a 4-pitch walk in the sixth to become the first Crawdad on base since the leadoff man in the second inning, but he was stranded on base as Dykstra completed six scoreless frames.
Hickory starter Tyler Smith opened with five scoreless innings before faltering in the sixth. Danny Hayes singled with one out and moved to second when Jacob Morris drew a 4-pitch walk. Trey Michalczewski followed with a base hit to center field, plating Hayes for a 1-0 lead and chasing Smith from the game.
In the seventh, heads up base-running by Hunter Jones helped Kannapolis (22-28) extend the lead. With two outs and Jones on first, Cleuluis Rondon dropped a bunt up the third base line, and with the pitcher, catcher and third baseman all in to play the dribbler, Jones accelerated around second base on his way to third. Catcher Joe Jackson threw wide of third as the Crawdads shortstop tried to cover the base. The error allowed Jones to score for a 2-0 lead, and Rondon moved up to second base. Hayes followed with an RBI-single for a 3-0 advantage.
Kannapolis pounded out 11 hits - all singles - as Jones, Rondon, Hayes, Michalczewski and Jeremy Dowdy each collected a pair of base hits.
Jordan Guerrero came on in relief in the seventh, and the Crawdads (24-26) loaded the bases against him with one out. The Kannapolis reliever bounced back to strike out the side and continued with a scoreless eighth inning. Matt Abramson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the save (4).
The Intimidators wrap up this 3-game series in Hickory on Wednesday as RHP Thaddius Lowry (0-2, 3.00) faces Crawdads starter Cole Wiper (2-6, 4.43). First pitch is at 6 p.m. The Intimidators return to CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Thursday, May 29, for a 4-game series against the first place Hagerstown Suns.
