THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia beat Delmarva 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon. The Shorebirds scored a run in the first and nearly knocked Power starter Buddy Borden out of the game. West Virginia countered with a pair of runs in the fourth on a Wyatt Mathisen RBI double and a sac fly from Francisco Diaz. Borden settled in and threw five complete, striking out five along the way. The Power added two more in the eighth to secure Borden's first professional win. Brett McKinney threw two perfect frames for the hold and Isaac Sanchez worked the final two innings for his second save of the season. Adam Landecker and Justin Maffei had two hits each in the win.
TIME TO GET CRACKIN': The Power host the Lakewood BlueClaws for the first time this season. This four-game series is the first of four series between the two clubs this season; three of which will be played in Charleston. West Virginia holds a 74-62 all-time series lead thanks to a 20-4 record against Lakewood during the 2013 season. The Power are 43-35 at home against the 'Claws and will play 11 of the 15 meetings this season at Appalachian Power Park.
SPLIT IT UP: The Power split their four-game set against Delmarva and are now 3-8-2 in their 13 series this season. West Virginia's last series win was at the tail end of April when the club took three out of five from Kannapolis.
WINNER WINNER: Buddy Borden notched his first professional win Tuesday. The right-hander, a seventh round pick last year, made 14 appearances totaling 53 innings before notching his first victory.
A DOZEN STRAIGHT: Reese McGuire's hitting streak has reached twelve straight games after two hits on Monday. The 19-year-old is hitting .391 with 18 hits over his last 46 at bats since May 7. McGuire surpassed Erich Weiss's April streak of 11 games for the longest by a West Virginia player this year. It is also the second longest current streak in the league, behind only Savannah's Jeff McNeil and his 13-game string.
TWO-FER: Adam Landecker had two hits in Tuesday's win over Delmarva for his first multi-hit game of the season and the eighth of his professional career.
TRENDING DOWN: The Pittsburgh Pirates minor league system is currently a combined 79-101 and has the 28th-best winning percentage at .439. The Indianapolis Indians are the only Pittsburgh affiliate that have a winning record. The New York Mets have the best collective winning percentage among farm systems at .628 and have a winning record at each of the four levels of baseball currently being played.
THE NAME IS THE THING: On Saturday, the West Virginia Power front office and Appalachian Power announced the extension of the naming rights agreement for Appalachian Power Park. The stadium, in its tenth season, will remained named after the utility provider for at least the next ten seasons. The initial agreement was slated to expire at the end of the current season and is now signed through the end of the 2024 campaign.
PROMO UPDATE- MAY 24: West Virginia hosts Lakewood at 7:05 pm on Saturday. It is third annual Redneck Night at Appalachian Power Park and features a mason jar mug giveaway to the first 1,000 fans, a redneck wedding, Olympics, and cuisine. Stock racing legend Bobby Allison will also make a guest appearance.
POWER POINTS: Reese McGuire's on-base streak is at 16 games, the second longest current streak in the league. Harold Ramirez's on-base streak was snapped at nine straight after going 0-3 on Tuesday... Will Kendall, the lone left-hander in the West Virginia bullpen, has been placed on the Power Disabled List by Pittsburgh. The Pirates, in turn, promoted left-hander Jared Lakind from Jamestown.
