(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Savannah starter Miller Diaz and two relievers combined to shut out Lexington on five hits as the Sand Gnats blanked the Legends 4-0 Thursday night.
Diaz, 5-0, struck out eight batters and walked three in six and one-third innings as he lowered his earned run average to 1.45.
He allowed all five Legends hits. Diaz left the game with one out in the seventh inning after the Legends loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman. Akeel Morris struck out the next two hitters to get out of the jam. Morris worked a scoreless eighth inning and Tyler Vanderheiden pitched the ninth.
The Sand Gnats took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when L.J. Mazzilli singled, stole second, went to third on a single by Dominic Smith and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Victor Cruzado.
Savannah added two runs in the sixth. Patrick Biondi led off with a double, moved to third after a fly ball to center field by Jorge Rivero and scored on a single by Jeff McNeil. McNeil stole second base and scored on a two-out double by Smith.
Mazzilli's solo homer in the eighth closed out the scoring.
Legends starter Matt Tenuta (2-5) was the losing pitcher. He worked five and one-third innings and allowed six hits and three runs.
Dominique Taylor and Ramon Torres each had two hits for the Legends. Taylor has 13 hits in his last 25 at bats.
The two teams will meet again Friday night in the second game of the four-game series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
