Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - The BlueClaws sweated out a 10-9 win over West Virginia on Thursday night, hanging on to win a game that they led 9-0 after an inning and a half. The win, however, gives the BlueClaws five wins in their last six games and a win in the first game in the four-game set at Appalachian Power Park.
The BlueClaws scored six times in the first inning, their largest inning of the season. Andrew Pullin hit his fifth home run of the season on the third pitch of the game to make it 2-0. The BlueClaws added runs on RBIs from Mitch Walding on a SAC fly and consecutive RBI singles by Deivi Grullon, Jiandido Tromp, and Carlos Tocci, who started the inning.
In the second inning, Samuel Hiciano hit his fourth home run of the year as the BlueClaws built a 9-0 lead.
After a JP Crawford RBI double made it 10-2, the Power scored two on an Edwin Espinal home run in the third inning. They added two more off Mark Leiter in the fourth to make it 10-6.
Pullin and Hiciano each drove in two for Lakewood, who had hits from eight of their nine starters.
The Power brought the tying run to the plate off Yacksel Rios in the sixth, but Rios got Wyatt Mathieson to pop out to end the inning. In the eighth, Delvi Francisco took over and threw a scoreless inning, giving the BlueClaws a 10-6 lead going to the 9th.
Francisco, however, walked the first four hitters in the 9th inning, and Cody Forsythe came in with the tying run on base. After allowing a single, Forsythe retired the next three, including getting the last two outs, a strikeout of JaCoby Jones and a fly out from Reese McGuire, with the tying run at third.
For Forsythe, it was his 7th save of the year. Rios (1-0) earned the win after throwing three scoreless innings of relief. Starter Mark Leiter allowed six runs/four earned in four innings.
Lakewood won the game despite their last 20 hitters being retired after Crawford's RBI double in the third inning.
The series continues on Friday night at 7:05. RHP Alejandro Arteaga (3-5, 8.66) throws for Lakewood opposite West Virginia RHP Justin Topa (2-2, 5.05).
