Game #45
RH James Dykstra (2-4, 3.76) vs. RHP Sebastian Vader (5-1, 3.45)
Today's Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) look to get back on the winning track after dropping eight of the last 10 games when they head to Salisbury, Md., to take on the Shorebirds (A, Orioles). Delmarva won two of three games last week in Kannapolis for a series win over the Intimidators, and today Opening Day starter James Dykstra returns to the mound for a second look at the Shorebirds. He'll face Sebastian Vader, who tossed a complete game against Kannapolis last week.
Intimidating Starter: James Dykstra, 23, returns to the mound for his eight start and second straight against Delmarva. He worked five shut out innings against the Shorebirds before allowing a pair of runs two outs into the sixth on May 16 in the first game of a doubleheader. While he has a 3.76 ERA (17 ER/40.2 IP), nine of the 17 earned runs he has allowed have come in the sixth inning or later, meaning Dykstra has a 2.06 ERA (8 ER/35 IP) through the fifth inning this season. The White Sox selected Dykstra in the sixth round of the June 2013 draft out of Cal State San Marcos. As a senior in 2013, he went 9-4 with a 2.02 ERA in 13 starts, working 89 innings en route to being named All-Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) First Team for the second straight year.
A Disturbance in the Force: Sebastian Vader, 21, makes his eight start and second straight against Kannapolis. He is coming off four straight wins, including a complete-game victory in the first game of a May 16 doubleheader against the Intimidators (7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K). He is 2-1 with a 5.19 ERA in three outings at Delmarva. Vader is in his first year at Class A Delmarva after spending the last two years at Short-A Aberdeen, going 8-11 with a 3.01 ERA (52/175.2 IP) in 27 games (27 starts) for the IronBirds. The Orioles drafted Vader in the 18th round of the June 2010 Draft out of San Marcos (Calif.) High School.
Three & Out: Kannapolis starting pitcher Jake Sanchez gave up three home runs on Monday night, the first time an Intimidators pitcher has allowed three long balls since May 10, 2009, when Dexter Carter gave up three long balls at Lake County.
Broadcast: Today's game can be heard via the Delmarva Shorebirds website: delmarvashorebirds.com. Intimidators team broadcasts will resume when the team returns to North Carolina next week for a 3-game series at the Hickory Crawdads.
