Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (32-13) fell for the fifth time in their last six games when they suffered a 7-1 loss to the Asheville Tourists (26-19) on Thursday night at Municipal Stadium. The loss drops the Suns record to 9-7 when facing the South Atlantic League's Southern Division this season.
It was the long ball that did in the Suns on Thursday, as five of the Tourists seven runs were driven in by a homerun. The first Asheville dinger came in the second inning off the bat of 1B Correlle Prime. It was a solo blast that put the Tourists ahead 1-0.
Then, in the sixth, it was Prime who went yard again, this time connecting on a grand slam homerun over the right-center field wall. The two homeruns for the night give Prime 10 long balls for the season, which matches his teammate Ryan McMahon for the league lead. It was the first time this year that a single player hit multiple homeruns in one game against the Suns.
Asheville collected its other two runs on RBI singles, one by 3B McMahon in the sixth right before Prime's grand slam, and the other by catcher Jose Briceno in the eighth. The lone Hagerstown run scored with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, when catcher Craig Manuel went yard for his fourth homerun of the season. Manuel was celebrating his 24th birthday on Thursday.
It was starting RHP Antonio Senzatela (5-1) who kept the Suns to one run in 8.2 innings to get the win for Asheville. Senzatela allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out two. Starting LHP Hector Silvestre (1-1) suffered the loss for Hagerstown. He went six innings, giving up six earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out one.
These two teams continue their four-game series at Municipal Stadium on Friday May 23. The Suns will send RHP Austin Voth (1-3) to the mound for his ninth start and appearance of the year. He will square off against RHP Alex Balog (3-3) for Asheville. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
