Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
HIGHLIGHTS: The West Virginia Power dropped a 5-4 decision to the Lexington Legends Wednesday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. The Legends scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to regain the lead for good and snap the Power's three-game home winning streak.
West Virginia held a 2-0 lead after one inning when Evan Chambers walked and Elevys Gonzalez hit an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall for his first South Atlantic League home run. That advantage held until the third inning as Lexington scored a pair of runs on three hits, including run-scoring doubles by Jose Altuve and J.D. Martinez off Power starter Jason Erickson.
West Virginia regained the lead in the home half of the third. With runners on the corners, Elevys Gonzalez was nearly picked off first base and got caught in a rundown, allowing Bengie Gonzalez to steal home for a 3-2 edge.
Lexington countered in the sixth on a home run by Martinez and a run-scoring ground out from Aaron Bray. All four Legends runs to this point were charged to Erickson as the visitors took a 4-3 lead.
The Power tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jesus Brito hit a leadoff solo home run against Jose Trinidad to even the score at four all. It was Brito's sixth home run of the season, matching Rogelio Noris for the club lead, and his second at home this season.
In the eighth, Zach Foster allowed base hits to Jacob Goebbert and Andrew Simunic. Bray followed with a grounder to short on a drawn in infield, but Bengie Gonzalez's only play was to first for the out, thus allowing Goebbert to score from third to give Lexington a 5-4 lead.
The Power managed to put the tying run in scoring postion in the eighth and ninth innings, but Aaron Baker was thrown out at the plate to end the eighth and David Rubinstein was stranded on third as the game ended.
Foster (3-1) took the loss, while Arcenio Leon (2-2) earned the win. Kirk Clark pitched the scoreless ninth for his seventh save in eight chances. Elevys Gonzalez had three of West Virginia's five hits, while Martinez was a triple shy of the cycle for Lexington.
The third inning runs scored by the Legends were their first of the series and snapped the Power's 20 inning scoreless streak, all during this series.
West Virginia and Lexington close out this four game series on Thursday evening at 7:05 pm. Maurice Bankston will make the start for the Power against the Legends David Duncan.
