Legends Hold On To Beat Power 5-4

J.D. Martinez homered, doubled and singled as the Lexington Legends edged the West Virginia Power 5-4 Wednesday in Charleston.

Martinez, the South Atlantic League's leading hitter with a batting average of .361, pulled the Legends into a 3-3 tie with a solo homer in the top of the sixth inning.

The Legends took the lead with another run in the sixth on a walk to Kody Hinze and singles by Jake Goebbert and Andy Simunic. West Virginia tied the score at 4-4 on a solo home run by Jesus Brito in the bottom of the seventh, but the Legends moved in front for good with a run in the eighth on singles by Goebbert and Simunic and an infield out by Aaron Bray.

Goebbert threw out a runner at the plate in the bottom of the eighth, and West Virginia left a runner stranded at third in the bottom of the ninth.

Arcenio Leon (2-2), who pitched the seventh and eighth innings for Lexington, was the winning pitcher. Kirk Clark pitched the ninth and picked up his seventh save.

West Virginia reliever Zach Foster (3-1) was the losing pitcher. The two teams wrap up their series in Charleston with a game Thursday night at 7:05. The Power have taken two of the first three.
