Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Jorge Bucardo struck out eight, one short of a career-high, in seven strong innings as the Augusta GreenJackets held on late to earn a 3-2 win over the Rome Braves from Lake Olmstead Stadium on Wednesday night.
Bucardo (3-2) allowed two runs - both unearned - on two hits and two walks in his seven innings. The righty is now 3-0 in the month of May.
Ryan Cavan got the GreenJackets on the board in the fourth with a two-run double to left-center. Sharlon Schoop followed with a base hit which scored Cavan only after the ball was booted in center to make things 3-0.
Rome got to Bucardo in the seventh as Jordan Kreke reached on an error to lead off the inning. Kreke came around to score on Jake Hanson's RBI triple down the left-field line to put the Braves on the board. Hanson scored on a groundout to pull Rome to within a run.
The GreenJackets were rebuffed in any attempt to add to their slim lead in the late innings. Julio Surinach threw three perfect innings out of the Braves bullpen to keep things close. The Braves stranded the tying run in the eighth and had two out with one out in the ninth when Devan Kline induced a 6-4-3 double play to preserve the win and earn his second save of the year.
Braves starter Chris Masters (1-3) took the loss, allowing three runs - two earned - on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Augusta looks for the series split on Thursday night with BJ Salsbury (4-2, 3.62) on the mound to face Robinson Lopez (2-2, 1.99).
