Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns (26-21) came back from down five runs with a six-run eighth but fell 11-10 after a Lakewood BlueClaws (26-21) ninth inning rally on Wednesday afternoon.
Lakewood got on the board first with a two-run second inning with an RBI double by Stephen Batts followed by an RBI single to center by Adam Buschini for a 2-0 lead.
The Suns tied the game in the top of the fourth with two straight RBI singles from Brett Newsome and Sandy Leon.
Two innings later, Hagerstown got their first lead on a Francisco Soriano fielder's choice with the bases loaded and one out, scoring Brett Newsome for a 3-2 lead.
The Lakewood bats responded in a strong way in the bottom of the sixth against the Hagerstown bullpen. The BlueClaws combined for six runs, including a 2-run single by Jiwan James off Rob Wort and later two RBI doubles. With Lakewood leading 8-3, the game looked lost for Hagerstown.
The Suns did not give up as the bats came alive in the top of the eighth. After scoring three runs, including a Newsome RBI double, the Suns got runners on the corners with two out. Steven Souza homered to left field, his eighth on the season to retake the lead for Hagerstown 9-8.
Hagerstown got an insurance run the next inning. With pinch runner Destin Hood on first, Sandy Leon doubled into the right field corner to bring in Hood for a 10-8 lead.
The BlueClaws rallied in the bottom of the ninth. With Wanel Vasquez (2-3) on the mound on a man on first, Kyle Lafrenz doubled to score Buschini to cut the Hagerstown lead to one. After a ground out and walk the BlueClaws had runners on the corners with one out as Dean Weaver came in. Alan Schoenberger grounded to second base, but Jeff Kobernus made a fielding error, scoring a run and advancing James to third to tie the game. Next batter, Leandro Castro hit a slow ground ball to second, but James scored to win the game for Lakewood.
Both starters pitched just three and two-thirds innings. Paul Demny allowed two runs and struck out four for the Suns, while Juan Rodriguez gave up two runs and had six strikeouts for the BlueClaws.
Joshua Zeid (3-2) gets the win, pitching the end of the eighth and ninth innings, allowing two runs in one-and-a-third.
Vasquez got his third loss of the season pitching 1.1 innings with three runs allowed, just two earned.
The Suns will look to leave Lakewood with a series tie in the final game of the four-game set on Thursday at 6:35 p.m.
