Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - Pedro Zapata's game winning single in the bottom of the 14th inning gave the Savannah Sand Gnats (28-19) a 5-4 victory over the Kannapolis Intimidators Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. It was longest home game of the year for Savannah and the second extra-inning game of the home stand. Savannah tied up the game with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the ninth to send it to extras.
Pedro Zapata started strong and ended as a hero. In the 14th, he drove a single past the dive of Kannapolis 1B Ian Gac into right field to drive in 1B Luis Rivera with the winning run. Rivera had reached to start the 14th on a throwing error by Kannapolis 3B Rafael Vera and advanced to third on a throwing error on Intimidators' pitcher Zach Piccola. Zapata began the game by leading off the bottom of the first inning with his first professional homer, drilling a line drive over the manual scoreboard in left-center field to give Savannah an early 1-0 lead.
Trailing 4-1, entering the bottom of the eight inning, the Gnats loaded the bases with no out. After a pair of strikeouts, SS Wilmer Flores singled up the middle, scoring two runs to bring Savannah within a run at 4-3.
The Gnats completed their comeback with two outs in the ninth. C Kai Gronauer reached on a two-base error on Kannapolis CF Trayce Thompson to start the frame. With two outs, Rivera singled cleanly through the right side driving home Gronauer with the tying run.
Kannapolis tied the game at 1-1 in the second against Armando Rodriguez and took a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Ian Gac's solo home run in the sixth made the score 3-1 and chased Rodriguez from the game.
The Savannah bullpen of Erik Turgeon, Collin McHugh and Brandon Sage combined on 8.2 innings of one-run ball. Sage picked up his second win to go to 2-2.
The Gnats and Intimidators finish their four-game series on Thirsty Thursday at 7:05 pm. LHP Mark Cohoon (4-1, 2.05) will take the ball for Savannah. The radio broadcast will begin on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com at 6:50.
