Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

Errors abounded for the Kannapolis Intimidators as they lost a 4-1 lead and the Savannah Sand Gnats walked off with the victory in the 14th inning by a score of 5-4.

In the eighth inning leading 4-1, Justin Collop, who worked extremely well through 7.1 innings allowed the bases to get loaded with no one down. He struck a batter out before being taken out for Andre Rienzo. With one down Rienzo allowed a slow roller up the middle, Jesus Villegas and Daniel Wagner had a miscommunication and the ball rolled into center, scoring two to make it 4-3. In the ninth inning, Trayce Thompson dropped a fly ball in right centerfield, allowing Kai Gronauer to reach second and eventually score on a single by Luis Rivera with two out and two strikes to sent the game to extras.

Finally, in the fourteenth, against Zach Piccola (0-2) Rafael Vera made a throwing error to first, allowing Rivera to reach second, Piccola threw the ball away to second allowing the runner to get to third and with one out Pedro Zepata hit a game winning single to right.

The Intimidators were not without their late-inning chances as they had Nick Ciolli on at second with no one down, but Thompson couldn't advance him with a bunt and he was stranded in the 13th inning and the Intimidators (23-24) had multiple runners on base in the 11th and 14th but couldn't score.

The Intimidators took the lead in the second on a triple by Ciolli and a sacrifice fly, added to that lead in the fourth, fifth with a solo home run by Ian Gac and a single run in the eighth to make it 4-1. Collop allowed only a solo home run to Pedro Zepata before giving up two more earned in the eighth and gets a no decision.

The game in both time and innings is the second longest of the season and the Intimidators have blown leads in four of their last five losses. They will be looking for a series split as Matt Hopps will start on Thursday in the series finale before returning home on Friday.
