Las Vegas Wranglers News Release
Las Vegas, Nev- The Las Vegas Wranglers defeated the Idaho Steelheads in game one of the Kelly Cup quarter finals by a final score of 1-0. Ryan Huddy had the lone goal of the game in double overtime to lift the Wranglers to a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series earning him the first star of the night. Goaltender Michael Ouzas turned away all of the 29 Steelheads' shots that he faced in the shutout earning him the second star of the night. On the other side Idaho goalie Jerry Kuhn allowed the lone goal on the 49 Wranglers' shots that he faced as he earned the third star of the night. Neither team could convert on the power play with a combined seven opportunities.
The two teams had not met in the post season since 2007 and they certainly gave the fans something to watch. After a scoreless regulation both teams headed to sudden death overtime. The first overtime continued the trend from the first three periods as both goalies stood tall and maintained the scoreless affair. It looked like it was going to head to triple overtime but the regular season point leader for the Wranglers, Ryan Huddy, had other plans. At the 17:44 mark of the fifth period Huddy picked up the loose puck and skated in with defensemen Jamie Fritsch cutting to the back door. Huddy faked the pass and then laced a shot straight through the five-hole of Kuhn to score the lone goal of the game and lift the Wranglers to the 1-0 victory.
The same two teams battle again tomorrow night in game two of the Kelly cup quarter finals. The puck drops at 7:05PM PST at the Orleans Arena.
The Las Vegas Wranglers® are the ECHL affiliate to the National Hockey League's Phoenix Coyotes and the American Hockey League's San Antonio Rampage.
