Wranglers Edge Steelheads 3-2 in the Shootout
January 28, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, Idaho - Forward Dan Tudin scored the game-winning goal in the shootout, as the Las Vegas Wranglers slipped past the Steelheads, 3-2, in front of 5,016 fans at Qwest Arena on Saturday night.
The Wranglers scored three times in the shootout, while David Bararuk was the only Steelheads player to find the back of the net in their four chances. The Steelheads (23-14-4) earn one point for the shootout loss, while the Wranglers (31-7-4) pick up their 31st win of the season.
The first period was scoreless, as the Steelheads out-shot the Wranglers, 9-8.
In the second period, the two sides traded power play goals. The visitors tallied first, as Sean O'Connor poked a loose puck into the empty net to make it 1-0. Goaltender Steve Silverthorn (27 saves) made the initial save on a point shot from defenseman Scott Schoneck, but the puck found its way through his equipment and laid in the crease. O'Connor fought through the Steelheads defense and pushed it over the goal line for his sixth goal of the season. Rookie Marco Peluso also assisted on the goal.
Marty Flichel tied the game at 14:30 of the middle stanza when he unleashed a shot from the circles that beat Wranglers' goaltender Marc Magliarditi (29 saves). Forwards David Bararuk and Garett Bembridge set up the goal, Flichel's 16th of the year and eighth on the man advantage.
The shots were even at 17 apiece and the score was deadlocked at one after 40 minutes of play.
Veteran defenseman Jeremy Mylymok netted a fluky goal to give the Steelheads a short-lived lead midway through the third period. Mylymok ripped the puck around the boards into the Wranglers' zone, which caromed off the end boards and into the Wranglers' crease. The puck bounced off Magliarditi and squeaked over the goal line. Just 53 seconds later, with the visitors on the power play, Chris Stanley banked a shot off the post to tie the game at two. Derek Edwardson got the only helper on Stanley's 20th of the campaign.
Both teams failed to score in overtime and the Wranglers even had a power play chance that they failed to convert on. Shots in the extra session were four to three in favor of the victors.
With the shootout defeat, the Steelheads fall to 1-1 in the shootout and 11-9-3 on home ice. Silverthorn is now winless in his last eight appearances, while Magliarditi leads the ECHL with 19 wins. For his ECHL career, the veteran now has 199 victories.
Game three of this series is on Monday, January 30. Faceoff is at 7:10 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, KTIK "The Ticket" beginning approximately 20 minutes prior to the drop of the puck.
