Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Joe Talbot continued his goal-scoring rampage with a hat trick and Matt Underhill stopped all 27 shots he faced to earn his fourth shutout as Alaska crushed Augusta 7-0 before 4,216 Saturday at Sullivan Arena.
Louis Mass opened the scoring just 22 seconds into the game and set the tone for the rest of the afternoon with a wrist shot from the point directly off a draw that sailed just underneath the crossbar for the goal that would give Underhill all the offensive support he would need. Peter Metcalf score the first of two Alaska power play goals at 8:51 with a drive from the left point, and Talbot's first of the day off a turnover extended the margin to 3-0 two minutes later.
Justin Maiser scored another goal directly off a face-off at 15:14, and the rout was on when Talbot scored his second goal with 3:20 still left in the first period. The five goals in a period matched Alaska's season-best (the Aces scored five in the third period of an 8-0 shutout at Victoria Dec. 17). Talbot flicked in a backhander off a rebound to complete the hat trick with Alaska on a power play at the 7:21 mark of the second period. He has scored 13 goals in his last 12 games. Ryan Gale's fourth of the year accounted for the final margin with 2:48 remaining in the game. 15 of the 16 players who dressed for Alaska, including Underhill, who assisted on the game's final goal, found their way into the scoring column.
The Aces (31-6-3) temporarily move into first place in the West Division standings, one point ahead of Las Vegas, who meets Idaho Saturday night in Boise. Alaska and Augusta meet again tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. in a KeyBank Sunday Skate with the Aces, where fans are invited to skate with the team as well as grab pictures and autographs immediately following the contest. All Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com. In addition, all home games and selected road contests will be available on a pay-per-view basis on the internet, courtesy of B2 Networks.
