Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Staten Island, NY - The Aberdeen IronBirds grinded out a 1-0 win tonight over the Staten Island Yankees, earning their first win of the 2014 season. Manny Hernandez singled home Alex Murphy in the sixth inning, and Brady Adamek and Garrett Cortright locked down the shut out win.

Murphy led off the sixth inning with a double that rolled all the way to the wall in right-center field. He advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hernandez then stepped up with one out and punched a ground ball back up the middle through a drawn in infield, scoring Murphy and giving Aberdeen a 1-0 lead.

Staten Island had their chances, but Aberdeen came up with the biggest defensive play of the night. Leading off the eighth inning, Jose Javier hit a ground ball to short. Justin Viele's throw was wide of the first base bag and Javier took off for second. IronBirds' second baseman Steve Wilkerson was backing up on the play, however, and threw out Javier as he tried to get to second.

The Yankees got a two out walk in the eighth as well, but that would be the last base runner they would get on the evening. Garrett Cortright knocked the Yankees out in order in the ninth, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Stefan Crichton earned the win, improving to 1-0. Cortright earned his first save of the season. The IronBirds will look for a series win tomorrow. They will send RHP Janser Severino (0-0, 0.00) to the hill, while the Yankees will counter with RHP David Palladino (0-1, 16.20). First pitch from Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
