Lowell Spinners News Release
NORWICH, CONN. - Raymel Flores's speed on the basepaths allowed Mauricio Dubon to get him home with a bloop single in the top half of the 12th inning, and the Lowell Spinners spoiled the home opener of the Connecticut Tigers, 2-1, Wednesday night at Dodd Stadium.
The game was scoreless until the seventh inning when Lowell (3-3) broke through as Deiner Lopez tripled into deep center field and scored on a groundout by Alixon Suarez. Bryan Hudson then greeted Connecticut reliever Johan Belisario with a triple but was stranded at third to end the inning.
Connecticut (2-4) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as Spinner reliver Rob Smorol loaded the bases on a single and two walks, and then lost right fielder Ismael Salgado on a 3-2 fastball that was low to force in a run to tie the game.
The game stayed tied until the 12th when Suarez reached on an error by the third baseman. Flores entered the game to pinch run for him and promptly stole second and then third before Dubon looped a single into left field that easily scored Flores with what proved to be the winning run.
Lowell starter Jason Garcia retired 10 of the first 11 Connecticut hitters, cruising through five shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five. In his two starts this season, he has struck out 10 batters in nine innings. Smorol struggled in the seventh with his control but his other two innings of relief were stellar. Oscar Perez (1-0, 0.00), a converted catcher, retired eight of the last nine hitters he faced to collect his first win in a Spinners uniform with four scoreless innings, striking out two while limiting the Tigers to just two hits.
Andres Torres, signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent on June 11th, made his debut with the Lowell Spinners tonight as the oldest player to ever put on a uniform with the club at 36 years old and 4 months, one month older than Bret Saberhagen when he made a rehab start for the Spinners in 1997. In his debut, Torres was 1-for-3 with a double in his first a-bat.
Sam Travis, the 2014 2nd round pick of the Boston Red Sox, made his debut for the Lowell Spinners tonight and was 0-for-4. As for the rest of the lineup, Dubon and Moore had multi-hit nights to pace the offense with Dubon knocking in his team-leading fourth RBI of the season.
Heri Quevedo (0-1, 12.00) gets the ball from manager Joe Oliver tomorrow as the Spinners complete their first road trip of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
