Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters blanked the Tri-City ValleyCats 6-0 on Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field for their second straight shutout victory and the 700th regular-season win in the franchise's New York-Penn League history.
Vermont got great starting pitching for the second straight night as Joe Michaud followed up Cristhian Perez's seven shutout innings on Tuesday with seven scoreless innings on Wednesday. Michaud gave up one base hit in each of the first four innings before retiring 10 of the final batters he faced (only ValleyCat to reach was on a hit by pitch). Jonnie Massad and Fernand Cruzado both tossed a scoreless inning to complete the shutout.
With the back-to-back shutouts, Lake Monster pitchers have not allowed a run since the fourth inning of the home opener on Monday, a stretch of 23 consecutive innings. It is also the first consecutive home shutouts for Vermont since they blanked Tri-City in three straight games June 28-30, 2010.
The Lake Monsters scored twice in the third inning for a 2-0 lead before breaking the game open with three runs on five hits in the fifth. Ben McQuown got the rally started with an RBI triple to right field, then scored on a Brett Vertigan suicide squeeze bunt single back to ValleyCat starting pitcher Austin Chrismon. Two batters later Ryan Huck drove home Vertigan with an RBI double down the leftfield line. Huck also produced Vermont's final run in the seventh as he followed a leadoff walk to Joe Bennie with an RBI triple.
McQuown was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, while Yairo Munoz was 3-for-4 with a run and double as the Lake Monsters pounded out 13 hits in the victory, which put Vermont (4-2) into sole possesion of first-place of the Stedler Division over Tri-City (3-3). Chrismon (1-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on 10 hits over five innings to take the loss, while seven different ValleyCats ended the night with one hit.
Vermont and Tri-City will wrap up the brief two-game series on Thursday night starting at 7:05 pm. It is Stowe Mountain Resort Night at the ballpark with the first 2,000 fans receiving a free voucher for a free FourRunner Quad Ride or Gondola Sky Ride at Stowe Mountain. -monsters- get a voucher for a Free FourRunner Quad Ride or Gondola Sky Ride.
