Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Walk Off Bug Bites In Staten Island
The Aberdeen IronBirds played their first game of the season away from Dutchess Stadium, but the result was all too familiar as the Staten Island Yankees walked off winners, 4-3, in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was the fourth time in five losses that the IronBirds have fallen victim to a walk off loss. Staten Islands' Nathan Mikolas hit a two run single to left-center, scoring Ty McFarland and Thairo Estrada, giving the Yankees their third victory of the season.
Cunningham Turns In Solid Start
RHP Nick Cunningham had a solid start on the mound for Aberdeen, as he went five innings, allowing just two hits, one run (unearned), striking out three without surrendering a walk. It was Cunningham's first professional start, after making a few starts at Arizona over the last several seasons. He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 20th round of the 2013 draft.
Alex Murphy, RBI Machine
Aberdeen DH Alex Murphy accounted for all three runs for the IronBirds last night. His single in the third scored Jamill Moquete, and his single in the seventh scored Justin Viele and Sam Kimmel, and at the time gave Aberdeen a 3-1 lead. Murphy is batting .333, and his six hits in 18 at-bats are second-most on the team behind Hector Veloz, who has seven base hits.
RISP and LOB
Aberdeen left 10 men on base in last night's game and stranded a runner on third in four separate innings. Through five games, the IronBirds have stranded 47 base runners, most in the New York-Penn League. The IronBirds also were 2-16 with runners in scoring position in last night's loss.
On the mound tonight...
Aberdeen will turn to LHP Bennett Parry for tonight's start. He was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 40th round of the 2011 draft. He is 4-6 in his professional career, including an 0-3 mark in 11 games for Aberdeen in 2012. He pitched in 11 games for the Delmarva Shorebirds earlier this season. He will be opposed by the Yankees' Andy Beresford. Beresford pitched against the IronBirds on three occasions last season and had a 3-2 record overall for Staten Island with a 1.80 ERA.
