WooSox Extend Winning Streak to Five with 5-4 Win
July 1, 2022 - International League (IL)
Worcester Red Sox News Release
ROCHESTER, NY - A four-run first-inning rally, a late solo home run by Ronaldo Hernandez, and 5.1 two-hit shutout innings from Brayan Bello led the Worcester Red Sox to a fifth-straight win, 5-4, over the Rochester Red Wings on Friday night.
The WooSox have now won 10 of their last 11 games, and have moved to within a game of first place in the East Division.
Red Sox top pitching prospect Brayan Bello scattered two singles and worked around three walks with eight strikeouts. He left the game after his 84th pitch, a fastball that struck out Joey Meneses for the first out of the sixth inning.
Rochester committed a pair of errors to aid Worcester's first-inning rally, and the WooSox drove in four runs on a Connor Wong double, a Christin Stewart sacrifice fly, a Jeter Downs double, and a Pedro Castellanos single.
The 4-0 lead held until the bottom of the sixth, when Rochester cut the lead to 4-2 on an Andrew Stevenson RBI triple and a sac fly from Illdemaro Vargas to bring him home.
Hernandez responded with a big fly in the top of the eighth inning, a towering shot over the bullpen in left field to make it a 5-2 ballgame. That home run turned out to be the game-winning swing, as Taylor Gushue's two-run double narrowed the gap to one heading to the ninth.
Kaleb Ort secured a save for the second-straight game, striking out Stevenson and inducing a game-ending double play after a walk to Vargas.
The WooSox continue their six-game series with the Red Wings tomorrow night at Frontier Field. Radio coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on the 98.9 Nash Icon WooSox Radio Network.
The WooSox return home to Polar Park to start a six-game homestand on Monday, July 4, featuring a spectacular UniBank Fireworks show.
