Jacksonville Opens July with Win over Memphis

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - With the help of a five-run third inning, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp opened July with a 6-4 win over Memphis Friday night at AutoZone Park.

Jacksonville (41-35) blew the game open with five runs in the third inning. With one out and a runner at second, Lewin Díaz singled, scoring Jerar Encarnacion from second to increase the lead to 2-0. Peyton Burdick followed with a double that scored Díaz to make the score 3-0. After a wild pitch moved Burdick to third, he scored on a single from JJ Bleday to push the Jumbo Shrimp lead to 4-0. Charles Leblanc reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a two-run home run from Ryan Lavarnway (6) to give Jacksonville a 6-0 lead.

Memphis (42-34) got one back in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Ben DeLuzio singled and went to third on a single from Scott Hurst. A throwing error on the play allowed DeLuzio to score from third and cut the deficit to 6-1.

The Redbirds made things interesting with three runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Evan Mendoza doubled and scored on a triple from DeLuzio. In the ensuing at-bat, Hurst (2) blasted a two-run home run to make the score 6-4.

Jacksonville got things started early in the top of the second to take an early lead. Burdick led off with a single and advanced to third on a single from Leblanc, two batters later. After a flyout, Brian Miller slapped a single to score Burdick and give the Jumbo Shrimp a 1-0 lead.

The Jumbo Shrimp got a great effort from their bullpen. Will Stewart, Jordan Holloway, and Andrew Nardi (S, 2) combined for four scoreless innings with four strikeouts against one hit and four walks.

Jacksonville returns home Monday, July 4 to open a series with the Norfolk Tides. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. on Monday for an awesome Independence Day celebration at 121 Financial Ballpark. The Jumbo Shrimp will be giving away a 4th of July hat, presented by Nimnicht Family of Dealerships to the first 2,000 fans through the gates. The Jumbo Shrimp will be wearing their Patriotic Jerseys which are currently up for auction. The night will wrap up with an amazing Independence Day fireworks show!
