LAST TIME OUT
MOOSIC, PA (June 30, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders defeated the Buffalo Bisons for the third consecutive night with an 8-1 victory on Thursday evening. Armando Alvarez went 3-for-3 with a walk, stolen base, two doubles and his eighth home run of the season.
The Bisons took the game's first lead on a Chavez Young RBI single against RailRiders' starter Clarke Schmidt in the second inning. Schmidt allowed that one run over 2.2 innings of work with three strikeouts in his second appearance with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. SWB tied the game at one in the bottom of the frame via Derek Dietrich's run-scoring groundout. The RailRiders then jumped ahead with three runs in the third. Alvarez broke the tie with his fifth home run of the month. Later in the frame, SWB struck with two outs. Jake Bauers hit his first big fly with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with a runner on first and two down to make it 4-1. The RailRiders have scored 10 of their 18 runs this series with two outs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre extended the lead to 6-1 with two more tallies in the fifth. After Alvarez led off the frame with a walk and stole his fourth base of the season, Estevan Florial brought him home on a run-scoring double. Florial then swiped his International League-leading 26th bag of the year and was driven in on Miguel Andújar's sacrifice fly to left. Andújar is 6-for-12 with 6 RBI this series.
The RailRiders added two insurance runs in the ninth on an RBI single from David Freitas and Florial's sacrifice fly. Florial is 8-for-24 with 5 RBI over the last seven days. Vinny Nittoli, Michael Gomez and José Mujica combined to pitch 6.1 scoreless innings with six strikeouts out of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's bullpen in the 8-1 final. The RailRiders have now won 14 of their last 20 games.
NEWS & NOTES
FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome in the Buffalo Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, for the first time this season. The RailRiders played their only series in Buffalo, NY in late April with the Bisons taking four-of-six games.
JUNE, NOT GLOOM - The RailRiders finished the month of June with a 15-12 record, their first winning record in a lone month this season. They had won nine games in both April and May. June also saw the team's highest batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, total home runs and their lowest ERA of any one month.
BABY STEPS - Entering Friday, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is nine games under .500 for the first time since May 15 when the team was 13-22. They are also 8.5 games back of first place, which is the closest they have been since they were 8.5 back on May 11.
GOT HEEM - RailRiders catching has been throwing runners out at a much higher pace over the past two weeks as opposed to the rest of the season. Over the last eight games, the combo of Rob Brantly and Max McDowell have thrown out four-of-six (66.6%) would-be base stealers (Brantly 1 SB - 1 CS, McDowell 1 SB - 3 CS). On the flipside, David Freitas has allowed five stolen bases since the start of last week's series in Toledo. Even still all together, the RailRiders in their last nine games have caught four of eleven stolen base attempts (36.3%). RailRiders catchers had only caught 11 of 103 (10.7%) prior to this nine-game stretch.
HALFWAY AND HALFWAY - The RailRiders have played 75 games this season, which marks the halfway point of a slated 150 game season. Weirdly enough, July 1 also marks the near-perfect mid-way point of 2022. July 1 is the 182nd day of the calendar year which of course has 365 days.
SWIPER YES SWIPING - Estevan Florial has stolen 26 bases this season, which leads the International League. Twenty-six stolen bases is a single-season career-high for him. Florial is currently on pace to steal 50 bases this season which would set a franchise record, besting Tommy Barrett's 44 stolen bags in 1989 (inaugural season).
TO YOU, ANDÚ, ANDÚ - Including his time with the Yankees, Miguel Andújar tallied a hit in 16 of 21 games played in the month of June. Since June 8, Andújar has raised his SWB batting average from .282 to .315. During June, he slashed .352/.397/.549. His batting average and on-base percentage led all qualified RailRiders in the month, while his slugging was second to just Armando Alvarez (.727). In the first three games of this series, Andújar is 6-for-12 with a homer, double and six RBI.
DOWN WITH O.D.P., YA YOU KNOW ME - Oswald Peraza lost his eleven-game hitting streak last night (20-44, .455). It matched a career-best which lasted from August 9 to August 21, 2019 while with the Charleston River Dogs (16-for-44, .364). He has a thirteen-game on-base streak.
GIVE IT TO GREG - Greg Weissert leads the team with seven saves in eight opportunities. Seven saves is the most he's tallied in a single season of his career. He has been asked to gather four outs in three of those saves including in the Tuesday opener this week against the Bisons. Weissert's only blown save this year came on June 8 on the road against the Syracuse Mets.
STREAKY - José Peraza is on a six-game hitting streak... Armando Alvarez is on a five-game hitting streak... Greg Bird is on a nine-game on-base streak... Greg Weissert has made seven-straight scoreless outings... Shane Greene has made three-straight scoreless outings... Matt Krook has not allowed a run to score in 14-straight innings entering Friday...
ON DECK - Saturday the RailRiders will wear custom USA Jerseys to be auctioned off to benefit Camp Freedom. The first 2,500 fans 18 and older through the gate to get a free voucher for a PA Lottery scratch-off ticket, presented by the PA Lottery. The first 2,500 fans will receive an SWB Pop Socket.
