ABOUT LAST NIGHT: A pair of RBI doubles and a strong start from Indiana native Jerad Eickhoff lifted the Indians to a win over the Sounds last night, 4-3. The Indians took advantage of erratic pitching in the first inning, sending eight batters to the dish. Indy loaded the bases with no outs thanks to a Kevin Newman single, Ben Gamel hit-by-pitch and Tsutsugo walk and cashed in all three runs on Cal Mitchell's one-out double. Eickhoff posted two zeroes before Nashville scored a pair of runs in the third to make it 3-2. Consecutive two-out singles by former Indian Pablo Reyes and Brice Turang put the Sounds on the scoreboard, and following a walk to Almonte, David Dahl lashed a run-scoring single to Newman at shortstop. The score held until Tsutsugo's two-out insurance double plated Newman - who had singled and reached second on a wild pitch - before the stretch. A single and two-out throwing error by Rodolfo Castro extended the game, but John O'Reilly induced a groundout to seal the win.
CAL CLEARS 'EM: With the bases loaded in the first inning last night, Cal Mitchell roped a two-RBI double into left-center field and cleared the bases on a subsequent fielding error. He returned to the Indians' lineup on Wednesday night after spending the last month in the big leagues and since has gone 4-for-8. He has hit safely in his last eight Triple-A games dating back to 5/19 (1) with a .385 average (10-for-26) and .870 OPS. In 36 games with Indianapolis this season, Mitchell has hit .318 (42-for-132) with a .508 slugging percentage and .878 OPS.
ON THE MEND: Kevin Newman, Ben Gamel, Yoshi Tsutsugo and Jake Marisnick served as the first four batters of Indy's lineup yesterday and each recorded at least one hit in last night's win. Newman led the team with two hits and two runs scored, while Tsutsugo's RBI double in the seventh inning proved to be the game-winning run. Tsutsugo has been on a hot streak during his six-game rehab assignment, batting .429 (6-for-14) with two runs scored and a 1.091 OPS. Newman, Gamel and Marisnick's hitting lines from their respective rehab assignments are listed below:
Kevin Newman (6 games): .333 (7-for-21), 4 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, .348 OBP, .381 SLG, .729 OPS
Ben Gamel (6 games): 227 (5-for-22), 5 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 6 K, .320 OBP, .409 SLG, .729 OPS
Jake Marisnick (2 games): .222 (2-for-9), 1 2B, 5 K, .222 OBP, .333 SLG, .555 OPS
HOME GROWN: Jerad Eickhoff earned his second consecutive Triple-A win and third in his last four games with Indianapolis last night at Nashville. He now leads the team with five wins this season. Each of his last four starts since 5/31 at Omaha have been for 5.0-plus innings after he failed to cross the 5.0-inning mark in his first nine outings. He surrendered two runs in his first start back since being designated for assignment by Pittsburgh and fanned a season-high tying seven batters. In starts where he throws at least 5.0 innings, Eickhoff is 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA (7er/20.2ip) with 18 strikeouts.
SWAGGERTY STREAKING: Travis Swaggerty is tied for the third-longest on-base streak in the International League at 19 games (also: Nashville's Mark Mathias) behind St. Paul's Jake Cave's active 42-gamer. Since his streak began on 5/27, Swaggerty has hit safely in 16 of 19 games with a .324 average (24-for-74), 10 extra-base hits and 19 RBI. His hot streak extends even farther back than that, and he has reached base safely in 27 of his last 28 games with hits in 24 since 5/17. In that time, he owns a .343 average (37-for-108), 13 extra-base hits (five doubles, three triples, five home runs) and 24 RBI. In June, he has hit safely in 13 of 15 games, five of which have been multi-hit contests, with a .316 average (18-for-57) and .987 OPS. Four of his six home runs this season have come in his last 15 games.
TONIGHT: The Indians will look to build on their 2-1 series lead vs. Nashville tonight in an 8:05 PM ET first pitch at First Horizon Park. Last year, they split the season series, 5-5, with an even record in six games in Nashville and four in Indy. Mike Burrows is set to make his first career appearance against the Sounds in just his third career Triple-A start. Countering for Nashville is southpaw Ethan Small, who earned the win at Victory Field on 9/30/21 (5.0ip, 2er, 4k) in his only outing against Indy.
BURY 'EM, BURROWS: Indians pitcher and Double-A Altoona's former ace Mike Burrows will take the mound for his third career Triple-A start tonight at Nashville. Last Saturday vs. Memphis, his first outing at Victory Field, he yielded one earned run on a Scott Hurst solo shot in the third inning for his lone blemish over 4.1 innings. Burrows, 22, scattered five hits and struck out four in a no-decision. Through 14 starts between Double- and Triple-A, Burrows is 4-2 with a 3.03 ERA (20er/59.1ip), 77 strikeouts, 1.11 WHIP and .213 average against (47-for-221).
THIS DATE IN 2006: Oliver Perez moved into second place among single-game strikeout records in the Victory Field era when he struck out 13 batters in 7.0 innings at Toledo, trailing only Steve Parris' 16K game from 1998. Perez took the loss, 2-1, as he surrendered both earned runs in the seventh inning on five hits and two walks. Perez's 13-K performance is currently tied for 3rd with Mitch Keller (2019) for the most single-game strikeouts since 1996 (as of 2021), behind Ian Snell (17, 2009) and Parris.
