Duo Strikes Out 14 Batters, Walks Just Two
July 1, 2022 - International League (IL)
Norfolk Tides News Release
NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk Tides (37-39) defeated the Gwinnett Stripers (36-40), 2-0, on Friday night at Harbor Park.
DL Hall and Chris Vallimont combined to toss the first one-hit shutout by the Tides in a nine-inning game since Aug. 10, 2021, vs. Memphis, which was also at this facility.
Hall got the start and rebounded from some bumpy outings at Lehigh Valley, as he worked 4.0 scoreless fames and allowed the lone hit in the contest. He fanned eight batters and walked just one.
Pitching in front of the home fans for the first time this season, Vallimont made quite the impression, as he twirled 5.0 no-hit innings and tallied six strikeouts. He retired the first 11 batters he faced before he issued a two-out walk to Eddie Rosario in the eighth.
It would take just two batters for the Tides to take the lead in the ballgame and that lone run was plenty. Terrin Vavra was hit by a pitch to lead off the opening inning and would later score on an RBI-double by Jordan Westburg. Westburg now has 20 RBI in his first 20 games at the Triple-A level.
Kelvin Gutiérrez doubled the Tides lead in the fourth with a solo blast into the visiting bullpen, his fourth of the campaign.
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow night at Harbor Park. The Tides are set to start RHP Blaine Knight (1-2, 6.70) and the Stripers will counter with RHP Bryce Elder (3-4, 5.86). First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
POSTGAME NOTES
HALL MONITOR: After ranking fifth in the International in the month of June with 33 strikeouts, DL Hall kicked off July with an eight strikeout performance and did not allow a run in 4.0 innings of work...Hall also yielded just one hit and issued just one walk...it was his highest strikeout total since he fanned 11 on June 16 vs. Syracuse...it was also the first time Hall allowed one hit in a start since also allowing one in the first game of a doubleheader vs. Gwinnett on May 26.
OUCH!: Terrin Vavra was hit by a pitch twice tonight, the first Tide to get plunked two times in a contest this season and the first since J.C. Escarra on Sept. 25, 2021...Tides batters have been hit 55 times this season, the second-most in the International League...Norfolk is on pace to get hit 108 times this sesaon, which would obliterate the franchise record of 63, set in 2021.
WARM IT UP CHRIS!: Chris Vallimont was untouchable in his relief appearance tonight, working 5.0 scoreless and hitless frames, striking out six batters and walking one, to earn his first-career win at the Triple-A level...it was the second time in his career that he worked at least 5.0 innings and did not allow a hit, the first since May 21, 2019, where Vallimont did not allow a hit in 7.0 innings of work.
