Rochester Red Wings News Release
Worcester Red Sox (40-35) vs. Rochester Red Wings (40-35)
Friday - 7:05 p.m. ET - Frontier Field - Rochester, NY
Radio: Fox Sports 1280/iHeartRadio | TV: MiLB.tv
RHP Brayan Bello (5-2, 3.13) vs. RHP Cory Abbott (0-3, 6.03)
NEVER SAY DIE WINGS: The Wings fell 8-6 to the Woo Sox Thursday afternoon, marking the third-straight loss to open the series, something the Wings have done just one other time (6/7 - 6/9 @ St Paul)...rehabbing LHP Josh Rogers went 3.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs on three homers in the loss......RHP Jefry Rodriguez came on in relief and logged 4.1 innings of work, allowing just one run on four hits...right fielder Nick Banks picked up a homer, double, and two RBI in the loss...shortstop Iledmaro Vargas logged a pair of knocks and came across to score...the Red Wings are now 3-7 in their last 10, all of which have been decided by one or two runs...Today, RHP Cory Abbott (0-3, 6.55 ERA) and RHP Brayan Bello (5-2, 3.13 ERA) will start in game four of the series.
BANKSHOT: Right fielder Nick Banks went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a double...Banks' bomb was his first since May 3 (placed on injured list on May 11)...prior to today, the Texas-native was just 2-for-15 since returning to the Wings on June 23...yesterday was just the second time this season that the former Aggie had recorded multiple extra-base hits in a single contest (two doubles, 4/15 v BUF)...the outfielder leads the team with a .330 batting average (31-for-94).
QUADRUPLE DOUBLE: The Red Wings combined for four doubles in yesterday's contest, marking the most they have had in a game this month...DH Josh Palacios, 2B Jake Noll, C Taylor Gushue, and RF Nick Banks all contributed with a two-bagger...three of the Wings' four doubles came with runners in scoring position, helping the Wings squad go 4-for-7 with RISP...prior to yesterday, Rochester was 3-for-20 (.150) with ducks on the pond thus far in the series.
JEFRY THE JEFE: RHP Jefry Rodriguez came on in relief of rehabbing LHP Josh Rogers, holding Worcester to just one earned run with four strikeouts over 4.1 innings of work...Rodriguez has a 3.24 ERA (11.1 IP/4 ER) in four relief appearances this season.
CRAWLING OUT OF JUNE: The Red Wings' -35 run differential and 9-17 record in June, after posting a +35 run differential and 19-7 record in May, marks their first losing record in the month of June since 2018...the Wings failed to pick up double-digit wins in the month of June for just the second time since 1997 (1999, 7-21 in June)...despite only posting losing records in the month of June nine times in the last 25 seasons, the Wings have a 363-363 record in the month.
NO MORE LONG BALLS: Wings pitchers gave up four home runs as a squad in the loss to the Woo Sox Thursday, tying their season-high (4/20 at LHV) in the home runs allowed category...three of those long balls came off of rehabbing LHP Josh Rogers, the most allowed by an individual pitcher this season and the most by a Wing since June 10 when RHP Cade Cavalli allowed two shots in his outing...if you exclude yesterday's contest, Rochester would have given up the third least number of long balls in the month of June in the International League...including yesterday's loss, the Wings pitching staff has now given up the sixth-fewest homers in the IL (27).
SUPER ILDEMARIO: After not registering a hit in the first two games of the series, SS Ildemaro Vargas went 2-for-4 with a run in yesterday's game versus Worcester...yesterday was Vargas' 13th multi-hit performance in 52 games this year (25 with IOW, 27 with ROC), recording multiple hits in 25% of his games...the switch-hitter also recorded his 30th game without striking out this season...Vargas has struck out 26 times this season in 219 plate appearances, good for an 11.9% strikeout rate.
CORY'S GAME: Today, RHP Cory Abbott will start for the Red Wings...in his last start, Abbott went three innings, with zero earned runs while striking out six batters, tying his season-high in Ks (6, 6/5 vs. BUF)...in one appearance against Worcester this year, the right-hander pitched a scoreless inning in relief (5/14).
