Worcester Red Sox News Release

BUFFALO, NY - The Worcester Red Sox (18-21) were stymied by the Buffalo Bisons (23-16) pitching staff on Sunday afternoon at Sahlen Field, as Buffalo shut out Worcester by a 5-0 final.

Buffalo took five of the seven games in the series. It was the third time this season that the WooSox were shut out.

The Bisons scored their first run in the bottom of the third. With two on and two out, Brian Serven singled to right to bring in Leo Jimenez and give Buffalo a 1-0 lead.

Worcester starter Grant Gambrell tossed three innings. He allowed one run on four hits, while walking two and striking out a batter.

Sal Romano followed Gambrell and hurled three relief innings. Romano retired the first eight batters he faced before allowing a solo homer to Damiano Palmegiani in the bottom of the sixth. Prior to today, Romano had not allowed a run nor a hit in his previous three appearances.

Buffalo opened it up in the seventh when Orelvis Martinez hit his second long ball of the week, a three-run shot to put the Bisons on top 5-0.

Niko Kavadas finished 1-for-3 with a single and a walk, extending his on-base streak to 19 games. His on-base streak is tied for the second-longest active on-base streak in the International League.

Chase Meidroth tallied his eighth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with two singles out of the leadoff spot.

The WooSox will enjoy an off day tomorrow before beginning a 12-game homestand on Tuesday night at Polar Park, as they welcome in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. Radio coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon, 100.1 FM The Pike, and the rest of the WooSox Radio Network.
