Charlotte Knights News Release
(LAWRENCEVILLE, GA) - A five-run, ninth inning led the Gwinnett Stripers to a 6-4 win over the Charlotte Knights on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a six-game series from Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. The Knights at one point held a 4-0 lead, but the Stripers rallied for six runs over the final two innings for the win.
RHP Jake Woodford was marvelous for the Knights on Sunday. Making his team-high eighth start of the season, Woodford twirled seven shutout innings on Sunday afternoon, one of the finest starts by a Charlotte hurler this season. Woodford allowed just three hits and fanned eight batters on the day. He left with a 4-0 lead.
Gwinnett scored one run in the bottom of the eighth and then rallied for five in the bottom of the ninth for the win, the team's fourth in the six-game set. Former Charlotte catcher Sebastián Rivero had a big two-run, game-tying single in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs. With the game now knotted at 4-4, Gwinnett left fielder Bryson Worrell launched a game-winning, two-run home run.
Charlotte RHP Prelander Berroa (1-4, 10.34) was charged with the loss after he allowed four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. RHP Juan Then, who came on in relief of Berroa in the ninth, surrendered the game-winning blast to Worrell.
Offensively, Charlotte right fielder Oscar Colás launched his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot in the top of the first inning. Designated hitter Mark Payton continued his hot hitting and extended his hit streak to four games. He had two hits on the afternoon.
The Knights will now have an off day on Monday before returning home to Truist Field on Tuesday to open a six-game homestand against the Durham Bulls (Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays). The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and Mike Pacheco will have the call on www.CharlotteKnights.com beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. in Tuesday's opener.
