Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wood Ducks edged out the Dash 2-1, in extra innings, in the first game of the double-header, Sunday, and then one-hit Winston-Salem in game two, en route to a 9-0 win, sweeping the three game series.
Game 1
Win: Demarcus Evans (3-0)
Loss: Luis Ledo (2-1)
Time: 2:15
John King shined in his Carolina League debut for the Wood Ducks, giving up just one run over six innings, after being promoted from Single-A Hickory on Friday. King did not allow a hit until the fourth, although he gave up six hits overall, he walked two, and struck out one. He retired 11 of the first 12 men he faced, but did not factor in the decision.
The lone run he allowed came in the fourth, when Jameson Fisher tucked a double inside the first base bag, and Zach Remillard followed with a single to left to put the Dash ahead, 1-0.
It was the only lead of the series for Winston-Salem (18-17), and it was short lived. The Woodies answered in the top of the fifth with a Sam Huff double, followed by a Tyreque Reed broken bat single to center, to even the game at 1-1.
It stayed that way through seven innings, requiring extras in game one. In the top of the eighth, Yonny Hernandez began the inning at second. He advanced to third on a Leody Taveras groundout, and then scored on an RBI single from Anderson Tejeda, which proved to be the game winner, off of Luis Ledo (loss, 2-1), to put Down East ahead, 2-1.
Demarcus Evans (win, 3-0) tossed a scoreless seventh inning, and came back out for the eighth, loading the bases, before he got a strikeout, followed by a lineout, to seal the win.
Game 2
Win: Alex Eubanks (3-0)
Loss: Lincoln Henzman (1-2)
Time: 1:55
Francisco Villegas made his first start of the season, firing three hitless innings, and combining with Alex Eubanks (win, 3-0) for a one-hit shutout win of the Dash in a 9-0 final.
Villegas allowed two walks and hit a batter in three innings, while Eubanks faced the minimum over four. The only hit he allowed was a single to Jordan George in the fourth, who was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double by Leody Taveras.
The Wood Ducks (27-10) offense provided the duo plenty of support. They took a 2-0 lead just two batters in. Yonny Hernandez walked to begin the ballgame, and Taveras followed with an opposite-field home run to left, his second of the year. Hernadez has now reached base safely in 22 consecutive games.
It was a similar recipe for the Woodies in the third. Taveras laid down a bunt single to reach to begin the inning, and then Anderson Tejeda blasted an opposite field shot to left, to make it 4-0 Down East.
The Woodies increase the advantage in the fifth. Taveras doubled with one out, and then Tejeda was hit by a pitch. Ryan Dorow followed with an RBI double down the left field line to score Taveras, and make it 5-0. Later in the inning, Lincoln Henzman (loss, 1-2) uncorked a wild pitch to make it a 6-0 lead.
Henzman worked five innings, allowing six runs on seven hits, he walked two, and struck out four.
Down East would pile on three more in the seventh inning against Wyatt Burns. Dorow walked with one out, and scored on batter later on a triple from Diosbel Arias. Sam Huff followed with a sac fly to center, and later in the inning Yanio Perez came through with an RBI single, scoring Yohel Pozo who singled to left and made it to third on the play as a result of an error.
Down East has now won 14 of their last 16 ballgames, and the series sweep was their sixth of the year. They continue their seven-game road trip against the Potomac Nationals, Monday at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Sal Mendez (1-0, 2.38) will make his first start of the season for the Wood Ducks, opposed by fellow lefty Nick Raquet (1-5, 7.57) for Potomac. The pregame show will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online on 960thebull.com as well as the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
