Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Chicago Cubs have made the following roster moves that impact the Myrtle Beach Pelicans roster:
RHP Adbert Alzolay has been transferred to Myrtle Beach
RHP Brendan King has been transferred to Short Season Low A Eugene from Myrtle Beach
LHP Luis Lugo has been placed on the 7-day Injured List
RHP Alexander Vargas has been transferred to Myrtle Beach
INF Wladimir Galindo has been transferred to Myrtle Beach from Extended Spring Training
INF Luke Reynolds has placed on the Temporary Inactive List
Alzolay, who was rated as the No. 4 prospect in the Cubs system by MLB.com and No. 6 by Baseball America, makes his return to Myrtle Beach after spending half the season on the Grand Strand in 2017. Alzolay was placed on the Injured List on May 30, 2018 with a strained right lat after making eight starts in Triple-A Iowa. In 2017, Alzolay threw seven quality starts in his 15 games with Myrtle Beach before being promoted to Double-A Tennessee on July 6. As an 18-year-old, he was signed out of Venezuela in 2012 by the Cubs.
Vargas, a Rule 5 Draft selection by the Cubs in 2018, joins the Pelicans. In 2018 as a member of the New York Yankees farm system, he split time in between Double-A Trenton (two games), High-A Tampa (one game) and Low-A Charleston (19 games). Overall in 2018, the now-21-year-old went 5-1 with a 4.01 ERA in 22 games, seven starts. The righty missed the entire 2016 season with a lumbar spine strain. Vargas was originally signed by the Yankees out of the Dominican Republic in 2014.
Galindo, who spent all of 2018 with Myrtle Beach, returns to the Pelicans following a short stint in Mesa. In 2019, Galindo hit .125 in 13 games with the Birds before being transferred to Extended Spring Training on April 24. In 2018, Galindo hit .216/.276/.313 in 114 games, 105 of which were played at third base. The Venezuelan-native hit .290/.350/.432 in 44 games with Low-A South Bend to earn a Mid-Season All-Star nod in 2017 before suffering a broken leg that ended his season.
Alzolay will wear No. 20, Vargas will wear No. 19 and Galindo will wear No. 16.
The Pelicans roster now sits at 25 active players with three on the Injured List and one on the Temporary Inactive List.
