Wood signs two-way deal with Peoria

Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Peoria Rivermen have signed defenseman Stephen Wood to an American Hockey League two-way contract for the 2006-07 season.

Wood, a key contributor on the Trenton team that defeated Alaska in seven games in the 2005 National Conference Finals, has split each of his first two pro seasons between the AHL (Philadelphia) and the ECHL (Trenton), meaning that he could see time with the Aces as well as the Rivermen, Alaska's AHL affiliate. The two-way contract allows such movement and closely resembles the deal that winger Cam Keith signed last year. After a solid season at both levels, Keith has since signed a two-year AHL contract with Peoria.

The 6-3, 215-pound Wood, who turned 25 last week, contributed 28 points (7g-21a) from the back line in 38 games for the Titans last season and added two goals and nine assists in 28 games for the Phantoms when he was promoted to the AHL. He scored four goals and assisted on six others in 20 games during Trenton's run to the Kelly Cup in 2005 after accounting for 19 points (4g-15a) in 66 games combined between the Titans and Philadelphia in the regular season and being selected for the ECHL All-Star Game.

Wood enjoyed a stellar four-year career at Providence College, near his hometown of Sudbury, Massachusetts, scoring 20 goals in his last two years for the Friars and being selected to the Hockey East first all-star team after his senior season of 2003-04. He also earned second-team honors as a junior in 2002-03, when he led the team with a +21 rating.

Alaska welcomes Toledo for a pair of pre-season tilts October 10 and 11 at 7:15 p.m. before opening the regular season at home as well, Friday, October 20, at 7:15 p.m. against the Victoria Salmon Kings. 2006-07 Aces season tickets are now on sale; for more information on tickets, sponsorships, and off-season signings, please visit www.alaskaaces.com or call 258-ACES.
