Salmon Kings seize another Islander
August 22, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC- The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that the team has agreed to terms with Nanaimo native, Greg Hornby. He becomes the fourth Island-raised player added to the Salmon Kings 2006-07 roster.
From 2001 to 2004, the 5'11", 220-lb Winger played four years with the Cornell University Big Red (NCAA). Throughout his college career he netted 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists) and established himself as a tough, physically punishing power forward. During this time, the Big Red earned three Ivy Championships and one Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship, and made an appearance in the NCAA Frozen Four. Hornby was twice awarded the Dave Shippel Award for scrappiness and effort. In his senior season, he was given The Cornell Hockey Association Award, honoring 'the player whose contribution to the team is not apparent in the box scores. His efforts are more clearly measured in enthusiasm, dedication, desire, and unselfish willingness to give to the team an extra ounce of energy.'
"Greg can be dangerous to any opposing team," said Dan Belisle, Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager. "He can quickly become a fan favourite, and is determined to make an impact in whatever role he is needed."
Before his college stint, the 24-year old attended Wellington Secondary School and played junior hockey for the Nanaimo Clippers (BCHL). He led the team in penalty minutes (154) his final season, but he was also one of the team's leading scorers with 51 points (27 goals, 24 assists). He earned six power play goals, one short-handed goal, and four game-winning goals.
"Greg is gritty and well-rounded," said Mark Morrison, Assistant Coach. "He was tough to play against last season, so we are happy to have him on our side now. He's the type of player that is going to come in here and be an energy guy every night."
Hornby has spent the past two seasons in the ECHL between the Florida Everblades and Idaho Steelheads. In 2004-05, with the Blades, he tallied 9 points and 122 penalty minutes, and last season in Boise, Idaho, he finished with 13 points and 264 penalty minutes.
"I am excited to play on Vancouver Island again," said Hornby, the former BCHL All-Star. "I already know a few guys on the team, and will have the support of my family close by."
"I will do whatever needs to be done to help this team succeed," he adds.
