Down East Wood Ducks News Release

Zebulon, N.C. - Trailing 2-0 early, the Down East Wood Ducks plated four runs on five hits in the sixth inning, to take the lead and pull away from the Mudcats, on their way to a 5-3 win, Wednesday.

The Wood Ducks (4-3, 54-23) have now won three in a row, earning their ninth series sweep of the season, and improving to 8-3 on the year against the Mudcats (3-4, 42-34).

Carolina got on the board with a pair of unearned runs in the third. With two outs, Rob Henry reached on an error, and then John King (win, 2-0) loaded the bases on a hit batter and a walk. Eddie Silva would then hit an infield single to bring home a run, and Pat McInerney followed with a single through the left side to make it 2-0.

King would work five innings, giving up just the two unearned runs, on five hits, he walked one and struck out six.

The Woodies were held to just one hit through their first five innings, but did manufacture a run in the fifth. Julio Pablo Martinez led off with a walk, and then advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a wild pitch. Tyler Depreta-Johnson would then bring him home on a RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Down East would then explode in the sixth inning against Aaron Ashby (loss, 1-1). With one out, Diosbel Arias singled to center, and then Josh Altman followed with a double down the left field line. Yohel Pozo then singled home a pair of runs to put the Woodies ahead, 3-2. Curtis Terry doubled to extend the rally, and later in the inning, against Michael Petersen, Yanio Perez singled up the middle to plate two more, and push the Wood Ducks lead to 5-2.

Joe Kuzia (save, 8) came on and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth inning, and while he surrendered a run in the ninth, he got McInerney to ground into a game-ending double play, stranding the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

The Wood Ducks continue their road trip Thursday in Lynchburg when they send lefty Sal Mendez (4-0, 2.61) to the hill to face off with Hillcats left-hander Hector Hernandez (0-0, 3.00). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and the pregame will begin at 6:20 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com as well as on the MilB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
