Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Kinston, N.C. - Despite an early Wood Ducks lead, Winston-Salem scored five runs in the middle innings, and went on to beat the Woodies, 5-4, Tuesday.
Down East (7-6, 57-26) falls to 18-11 in one-run games this year, while John King (loss, 2-1) gave up a season-high five runs in the defeat.
The Woodies got on the board in the third inning when Hasuan Viera reached on a one-out single and then advanced to third on an error when Sam Huff reached on a fielder's choice. Yanio Perez then followed with a fielder's choice groundout that plated a run and put Down East on the board, 1-0, against Zach Lewis.
It was the only run Lewis would surrender as he worked five innings, allowing five hits. He walked one and struck out three.
Winston-Salem would battle back in the middle innings. After a pair of infield singles in the fourth, Craig Dedelow lifted a two run triple to right, to put the Dash ahead, 2-1. Then in the fifth inning, Tyler Frost connected on his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot, to increase the lead to 3-1.
The Dash would strike for another pair of runs in the sixth. Steele Walker and Jameson Fisher began the inning with back-to-back singles, and then Dedelow would drive in another run with a single to center. Later in the frame the Dash would add on a Carlos Perez RBI groundout to make it 5-1.
King went six innings giving up five runs on eight hits, he struck out four and did not walk a batter. He retired nine of the first ten batters he faced before running into trouble.
The Woodies would battle back. Yohel Pozo launched his sixth home run of the season to lead off the sixth, making it 5-2. Then in the eighth, Pozo ripped a double to the gap in right-center, and Julio Pablo Martinez followed with an RBI triple to left-center. Josh Altmann then hit an RBI groundout to make it 5-4.
Jose Nin (save, 7) came on for the ninth and worked a three up, three down ninth to halt the comeback for the Woodies.
The Woodies and Dash will play the rubber game of the three game series Wednesday at 7 p.m. when Down East sends lefty Sal Mendez (5-0, 2.42) to the hill to face off with Winston-Salem righty Jorgan Cavenerio (4-0, 3.65). The Wood Ducks will host their independence day celebration as they will wear their patriotic caps, and following the action will be the largest fireworks display of the season, presented by WNCT and Spirit AeroSystems. The broadcast will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com as well as on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
