BIRDS TAKE OPENER FROM MUDDIES BEHIND RICHAN
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans' Paul Richan threw a career-high seven innings, striking out nine batters in a 4-1 win over the Carolina Mudcats on Monday from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Richan tied a career high with his nine strikeouts while only allowing one run on four hits and walking two. Manny Rondon and Garrett Kelly each threw a scoreless inning in the backend to lock up the win with Kelly recording his third save on the season. The Pelicans struck first in the first inning on a Carlos Sepulveda sacrifice fly. After the Mudcats tied it with an RBI double in the second, the Birds took the lead and added on with an RBI ground out and a runs scoring on an error. Another tally scored on an error in the fifth to stake the Pelicans to a 4-1 lead.
THE BIRDS ARE HOT!
After the Pelicans lost their first five games of the first half, the Birds have won six of their last seven. Their five-game winning streak the first time the Pelicans had won five-straight games since May 3-8 when they won five consecutively. With a win on Saturday, the Pelicans won back-to-back series for the first time since beating Salem and Down East from May 3-9. The Pelicans still have not won six contests in a row since July 10-16, 2018 when they won two games against Carolina at home and swept Down East in a four-game series.
WELCOME TO THE BEACH
The Cubs had a flurry of roster moves on Tuesday, bringing two new position players to Myrtle Beach. The Birds welcome Tyler Durna and Delvin Zinn from Low-A South Bend. Durna led the Cubs with a .304 batting average and 21 doubles while owning an .824 OPS over 76 games. The first baseman was a monster in June, collecting three home runs and posting a 1.000 OPS in 25 games. Zinn hit .273/.341/.364 with 14 stolen bases for the Cubs. From April 10 through May 16, the infielder reached in 23-straight games on the offensive side. Zinn also played third, second and shortstop for South Bend, but played a majority of his games at second base.
STRAIGHT FLEXING
After a season-long seven-game stretch without a home run, the Pelicans have hit 14 home runs in their last 13 games. Over that span, five different players have sent at least two balls out of the ballpark. Cam Balego and D.J. Wilson both have three over that span, while Tyler Payne, Luke Reynolds and Aramis Ademan have two. Miguel Amaya hit a grand slam on Saturday for his first home run since May 20 and Grant Fennell crushed a solo shot on Sunday. Only Fayetteville (16) has more than the Pelicans' 14 home runs in the league since June 16. The Woodpeckers have a one-home run lead over the Birds in second-half homers (14). Balego now has eight long balls on the season. That mark is second on the team behind Kevonte Mitchell's nine.
LIGHTNING ON HIS FEET
Outfielder Zach Davis has made a name for himself on the bases in his career. Davis leads the league with 28 stolen bases. Because he has just played in 56 games, he is averaging 0.50 stolen bases per game. He has stolen two bases in the same game three times in 2019. A staple in the leadoff spot for the Pelicans, Davis has made 43 starts in the top spot in the order. The former Texas Tech Red Raider led all of the Cubs farm system with 38 stolen bases in 2018. On the offensive side, Davis has been on fire as well, hitting .357 (10-for-28) over his last eight games.
WHEN LOADED, IT'S DANGEROUS
After the last three series, the Pelicans have been much better with the bases loaded offensively, but they have still struggled on the hill. This season, opponents have a 1.328 OPS with three doubles, two triples and six grand slams. With the D.J. Wilson grand slam on Thursday and Miguel Amaya's single on Friday and grand slam on Saturday, the Pelicans at the plate now have a .660 OPS with the bases loaded with four doubles, no triples and two grand slams. In 60 at-bats, opponents have scored 83 bases-loaded runs and the Pelicans have only scored 52 runs in 65 bases-loaded at-bats. The Woodpeckers have now hit five grand slams against the Pelicans this season. Grant Fennell and Amaya lead the Birds with eight RBIs in those situations.
STRONG IN THE BACK END
Over the last nine games, the Birds' bullpen has been solid. The 'pen owns an ERA of 3.41 (11 ER over 29.0 IP) over their last nine contests. All 11 runs have been allowed by reliever Brian Glowicki, including two grand slams. Garrett Kelly has been the most recent start of the 'pen, going 3-for-3 in save opportunities and owning a 2.50 ERA over his 12 appearances and throwing nine consecutive scoreless innings.
PELICAN POINTS
The Pelicans are at .500 in a half for the first time since June 14, 2018 when they were 33-33...Yeiler Peguero was released on Tuesday. Luke Reynolds was sent to Low-A South Bend and Grant Fennell was placed on the IL.
